Is indigo too 'out there'?

Struggling to agree on names with my DH. He's discounting most of my favourite nature names (primrose, amber, pearl) and even my longstanding favourite Esme (he says Esme's are 'everywhere')
But he likes indigo (Indy as a nn) which really surprised me as he's usually fairly conservative.
I like the name but I'm concerned we are too 'normal' for it. Is it too much do you think?

Too out there, sorry.

Indira?
Irene?
Ingrid?

orinocosfavoritecake · 03/02/2022 10:48

I’d think you were an anti-vax nutter. online.ucpress.edu/nr/article-abstract/19/2/17/71146/Big-Bad-PharmaThe-Indigo-Child-Concept-and?redirectedFrom=fulltext

Which is a shame, because otherwise it’s a charming name.

Hobbes39 · 03/02/2022 10:48

I quite like it - Indy is a nice nn. I guess for me it slightly depends on your surname, but if you both like it, I don't think it's a totally crazy name - unusual and not to everyone's tastes, but it's not totally wild!

Hobbes39 · 03/02/2022 10:49

Oh and I don't think many people would make the link @orinocosfavoritecake has... it's not something I've heard of anyway!

Buddhabowl · 03/02/2022 10:50

Ha! That's what I'm worried about. Not keen on the other names that shorten to Indy and we don't want Indy on its own really. He might be persuaded on Primrose but he's made me have doubts on that now too.

Our surname is short and goes with everything really. It's not Smith or Jones as it's less common but it's similar in that it is quite unremarkable.

YellowLemonz · 03/02/2022 10:52

I quite like it.
But confused why you don't just call her Indy if your going to be calling her that anyway as a nn

gunnersgold · 03/02/2022 10:53

I love it ! I wish I'd named my son indi! Great name. !

ooonicorn · 03/02/2022 10:53

I know a couple of Indigo's. It's not usual round here

Bideshi · 03/02/2022 10:53

Didn't know whether you meant boy or girl as Inigo popped into my head.

Buddhabowl · 03/02/2022 10:56

Meaning for a girl but I know it can be either

I love Indigo/Indy! Not too out there. Also love Amber & Clover.

Rainbowqueeen · 03/02/2022 11:02

I absolutely love it.

DotDotDotDotDot · 03/02/2022 11:03

I really want to like Indigo, I think it could work really well as a girls name. However I don’t like the “Indigo child” connotations, have a quick google and you’ll see what I mean if you haven’t heard of it. Shame really as Indy is a cute nickname.
Suggestions maybe Cassia, Iris, Violet, Rosa? Good luck.

DropYourSword · 03/02/2022 11:05

In this day and age I really don't see it as too out there at all!

LydiaFTM · 03/02/2022 11:07

I love it. Who cares if it's out there (which I don't really think it is)!

Starlive23 · 03/02/2022 11:07

I love it, really lovely sounding word so would make a nice unusual name.

ParkheadParadise · 03/02/2022 11:07

Is indigo too 'out there'?

Aye

Buddhabowl · 03/02/2022 11:08

@DotDotDotDotDot we are trying to avoid R and C names due to other DC, but I love Rosa. That's why Primrose is on the list, I love the option of Rosie or Rose or Posy even as nicknames but I've tried Primrose out on a few people in real life and they've looked at me like I'm being silly!

OP posts:
Illyria17 · 03/02/2022 11:18

Another similar option could be Imogen / Immy

bloominglovelyorange · 03/02/2022 11:21

lovely name. Not out there these days

EatingGreens · 03/02/2022 11:24

It's one of the few names that gets my hackles rising.
Yes I knew some "Indigo children" type parents very tangentially 25 years ago.
It's a strong no from me I'm afraid.

MeatPieWoman · 03/02/2022 11:25

I know an Indigo. ( early 20s) Her parents call her Diggy.

Buddhabowl · 03/02/2022 11:32

@MeatPieWoman I don't suppose if you know if she likes her name?

Indigo has been rising in popularity for the last 20 years.
Now, in England and Wales, for girls, it's just outside the top 500:

In comparison, Esme is within the top 50 names:

Primrose has suddenly shot up the rankings, and is more popular than Esme:
