Alba or Indie

Hi - which one do you prefer?

Indie is a fabulous name, really dislike Alba too similar to Alma which is not good

Indie is a bit twee but goes nicely with Willow.

Alba is one seriously ugly name, plus all the other associations mentioned above.

@PrivateParty Thats (roughly) the Gaelic pronunciation.
You should Google it. It’s definitely not Al-ba though.

It definitely has an extra sound in the middle but I'd have said it was more Al-a-ba.

Use BBC iplayer see if you can hear how either the Radio or TV stations are pronounced.

Indie

I like Alba. I also like Ailbhe (pn. Alva), but outside of Scotland that might cause consternation.

Alba is Argos budget electronics brand.

I'm not a fan of Indie whether the full name is India and Indigo because I hear it so often it's lost that cool, indie vibe. If you're Scottish then there's the whole IndyRef thing that might not appeal.

Willow is a brilliant name. I would go for another nature name personally.

Am I the only one whose mind is blown that we can (presumably) share a set of islands and not know the names of the countries / land masses in their respective native tongues?

Would you call a baby Cymru or Eire?

My mind is no longer blown by other people's ignorance. It's just one of those things you have to get used to.

Alba is a gorgeous Spanish name. Go for it!

I know two Albas and it's really not a great name to hear day you day. Even one of the mums is regretting the choice.

I know an adult Alba who is very cool indeed. Also those dismissing it on grounds of its Scottish meaning are being very parochial as it’s a meaningful word (with specific pronunciation) in many languages.

Alba is the correct way to say it in Italian.
It translates as Dawn.
I personally prefer Indie.

Saor Alba! Alba gu brath!

But yeah, don’t call your child Scotland. Indie is lovely. Or Indy.

Are you Scottish?

One of the sisters who owns Finch bakery (they have a book/cake shop on instagram) has an Alba Pixie. I think it's nice, easy to spell and say. She's just had a new baby Inka. Her sister recently had a Wren (girl).
I do know the 80s electonic connection but it's not such a strong brand like Samsung etc.
I think it goes well with your other little girls name.
Not keen on Indie, nick namey and makes me think of Indiana Jones.

Neither - I thought of the Spanish name before the Scottish connection but now that people have raised it I do think it would be weird. And Indie isn’t enough of a name for me.

I really liked Alba but DH said it would be like calling DC Amstrad or Cymru which put me off a bit.

Indie feels unfinished. It's a cool nickname but I wouldn't want to be solely called Indie as a grown woman.

Congratulations though. Willow is beautiful, her new little sister deserves something equally beautiful.

Alba, definitely dont like indie, but do like India.
