Subjective I know, but what girls names make you think, that's a cool name.

I am always a little pleased to see the 'frumpy' comments as that slight hint of Marmite is what makes it a slightly edgy choice and therefore... cool!

I agree with this - DD has a ‘marmite name’ too (albeit generally described as ‘harsh’ rather than ‘frumpy’) and, as long as the dislike isn’t universal, I’m secretly quite content with it being a bit divisive. Once all the replies on MN turn positive you know a name is definitely heading for the top 50!

Ida, mentioned above, in an interesting one; it would have been dismissed as frumpy and old ladyish a few years ago but I keep seeing positive posts about it recently because of the Ava/Ada effect - reckon it’s the next similar sounding name to be picked up.

My own ‘cool names’ have mostly already been mentioned but a few that spring to mind are:

Clio
Gaia
Aphra
Frida
Aster
Vita
Joni
Isolde
Astrid

Also agree with Stevie (would use as nn for Stephanie), but oddly not Saskia, which where I live is actually a bit more ‘aspirational posh’ than cool.

I've never had the old lady association with Ida as I've never known any with that name. I have with Ada though.
I had a story book with Little Ida's Flowers by HC Anderson as a small child, so I've always had that association

The coolest women I know are called Leanne, Astrid and Claire. Besides maybe Astrid you've never say "wow, cool name". I know an Olive - may be a cool name but she definitely isn't cool.

I think a baby Claire would actually be quite cool now. I always thought Karen from Outnumbered stood out as a cool name, simply because it is unexpected. Although I would swerve using Karen now, for obvious reasons Grin

I'm with some others - I think Stella is a fabulous name - unfortunately I could not have baby no. 2 but if a girl I reckon I could have chosen Stella

I think Martha is cool because it’s frumpy. It’s not trying to be sexy, sparkly or the centre of attention. By choosing Martha, the parents are recognising that their daughter will be all those things and more, and doesn’t need to rely on a dazzling name to cause a stir. So I do think it’s cool, but I’m afraid it is too frumpy for my taste!

Other names I think of as cool are Isolde, Mimi, Erika, Petra, Manon, Joan, Anouk, Suki, Zainab, Hayat, Hero, Cecilia, Vita, Rose.

onedayoranother · 02/02/2022 14:08

Cool - hmmm. My cool may be your old fashioned (Martha? Nancy? Sound so old lady to me). I don't like weird spellings - too 'try hard'. My children have old names but my sons at least is coming back a bit, and both liked that they were the only ones in their whole school with their names. Just avoid the top 20 and weird ones like 'Apple' or 'Moon Unit' - sure to end up being ridiculed.

The coolest two young women I know through work are called Martha and Winnie.

They are intelligent, personable, political, dress fantastically…

For some reason I've always found Frances really cool. I love Frank for men too.

BasiliskStare · 02/02/2022 21:33

@couldhavenotcouldof22 - I think Frances is lovely - DS1 has Francis as a middle name

OpheliaTrousersnake · 02/02/2022 22:30

Thinking about it, the coolest person I have ever known, by miles, is called Rachel.

Just like every other person born in the 70s who wasn't called Sarah or Elizabeth...

Exactly. It’s the cool clumpy shoe of names, not the consciously sexy stiletto. Ditto Maud, Enid etc.
EnglishMcSwedeFace · 02/02/2022 23:05

I'm pleased to see my daughter's name (Astrid) appear on several people's lists. My Astrid is effortlessly cool but she doesn't get it from me or my husband.

As others have said cool is so subjective but if I heard Maud, Nancy or Paloma I'd think they were cool. I read a book years ago with a character called Wynter which I always thought was a great name but not one you could really use in real life.
