Subjective I know, but what girls names make you think, that's a cool name.

I met a very cool 92 year old lady years ago, she was called Ivy.
Iris is nice.

AutomaticMoon · 31/01/2022 23:54

Adriana

RoseSays · 31/01/2022 23:57

Max

AutomaticMoon · 31/01/2022 23:57

Luna
Keira
Christabelle
Sookie (another vampire show, True Blood, but these are deep south vampires and very cool)

KedgeIsland · 31/01/2022 23:58

@AutomaticMoon

Maud! That’s on par with Ida (which is coincidentally my name, but not the English pronunciation which has caused no end of grief with certain coworkers who would insist on their own pronounciation)

I’m cool but it’s in spite of my name hehe
It was my grandmother’s name though.

Imola is a cool hungarian name but I’m biased cause it’s my mother’s name.

Ida is also cool.
AutomaticMoon · 31/01/2022 23:59

Ah I just realised Sookie is a diminutive for Susana.
There’s lots of Hebrew names that sound cool too, if you’re after something more rare for the uk.

AutomaticMoon · 01/02/2022 02:02

@KedgeIsland Aw thank you, you’re too kind ☺️ It’s more common in Scandinavia and perhaps Austria/Germany, I think. I looked up the meaning and it just said ‘labour’ 😂

Kanaloa · 01/02/2022 02:07

@HomeHomeInTheRange

Nancy Martha
I know two little girls, sisters, with these names! They are indeed very cool kids.

I can’t think of one because I always think of name then realise I only find it ‘cool’ because I knew a cool person with that name!

Maybe Athena? I find that a cool name although I’ve never met one.

Esme
Roxy
Piper
Betty
Dixie

Flutterflybutterby · 01/02/2022 04:38

When I think cool, I think:

Martha
Beatrix
Nancy
Saskia
Tabitha
Clementine
Esther
Noa
Juniper
Ramona
Cleo
Jemima

Names which are classic or have strong roots, so they have a strength and dignity to them, but also are a little rare, and sound a bit quirky.

I do think that 'cool' is subjective though, to a certain extent, or depends more on your geographical region and personal interests. Like, cool to a punk-loving tattoo artist in Brighton is going to be different to cool for a football playing beer drinking lad from Bolton. For example.

Wow! So many replies and interesting responses. I'm not trying to create a cool child by their name, I was just thinking about name options and how for me the names that have been top 50ish for the last 5 years or so kind of lose their appeal by being overused, like you don't meet a baby Olivia or Ella and think, oh cool name! I also don't hear "try hard" names and think that's cool! Which got me to thinking, what name would spark the "that's cool" reaction.
Very subjective by the mix of responses. For example imo Martha is one of the frumpiest names out there yet its on multiple people's lists here, Rebel to me falls into try hard and therefore also not cool, but I can totally see how kids find it cool. I think Saskia is cool from the mentions above. I met a baby Ivy the other day and that felt cool although I have a feeling will fall into overused soon, whereas Saskia will stay cool because it's unlikely to become super popular...

I don't know why everyone's ignoring Doreen.

Me too! I have to say, I love your name though - Ophelia was on our list of girls names but doesn't go well with our surname

Saskia is a very common name in holland. And def not a cool one haha.

How about Winter
That's literally cool Blush

Aye, but the OP isn’t in Holland

Winter 🥶 is heading rapidly into Leanne/Lola-Mai territory, definitely not the right kind of coo.

What are the associations of Saskia in the Netherlands? My only one is Saskia van Uylenbergh, Rembrandt's wife.
PlumsInTheIcebox · 01/02/2022 10:25

I have a Martha and I can assure you she is no frump. I am always a little pleased to see the 'frumpy' comments as that slight hint of Marmite is what makes it a slightly edgy choice and therefore... cool! Grin

I really like Maud AND Ida! Pronounced Eye-da or Ee-da, I don't mind.

I'm also really keen on Jane. Other cool names in my opinion:
Willa
Aphra
Cary
Loveday
Thomasin
Cora

Exactly. Nothing that is overused is 'cool'

There's lots of beautiful underused 'cool' names outside the top 100!

OpheliaTrousersnake · 01/02/2022 12:44

Why, thank you @LittleMrsMama There weren't many of us around in the 70s, but we are quite common now (and, therefore, definitely not cool Grin).

My DC have names which would struggle to make it into the top 1,000 (they are "posh names", according to MN and also 'ridiculous', according to MN), but I think the likes of Martha and Maude and Gertrude are quite cool.

My middle name is Martha, and while my mother let a nun choose it (don't ask) because of Martha and Mary the sisters of Lazarus in whichever gospel it is I think the associations were with virtuous housekeeping for Jesus I've always rather liked it.

The Biblical Martha doesn't simmer in silence when her sister Mary sits listening to Jesus and leaves her with all the catering for Jesus and his followers who've rocked up for a spot of food and preaching, she complains to Jesus in one of the few shows of female assertiveness in the New Testament. (Unfortunately, Jesus's reply is pretty disappointing, but you have to like a woman for saying 'Fuck this! Why am I stuck doing all the cooking again, while my sister gets all the Brownie points for sitting at Jesus's feet?' Grin)

TopsieGreenwood · 01/02/2022 12:45

I love Ida. I prefer the eye da pronunciation
