Christobel/Christy and SIL

I'd welcome any thoughts on the name Christobel with Christy (-ie?) as a possible nickname.

One issue is that my sister's long-term partner (F) is called Kristie. They live in France so we don't see them all the time. Would this put you off? I don't care at all as they're different names and anyway Kristie is a lovely person so it's not a problem, but I just wondered whether it would seem odd to others (would probably do it anyway but it's nice to know!)

Actually would probably spell it Christabel which I think is the more usual way.

I think it's fine. I really like Christie, Kristin, Kirsten, Christina. I really don't like Christobel, sorry. It sounds like a Christmas tree fairy!

Maireas · 27/01/2022 18:33

Christobel is a nice name - commemorates a Pankhurst.
Christy would be fine, although similar to your sil name, it's a different initial.

Seriouslymole · 27/01/2022 18:35

Christy to me is a boy’s name - short for Christopher.

BlueFlavour · 27/01/2022 18:37

I absolutely love Christobel. Beautiful name. I think Christy is a great nn and not too similar.
Lovely choice.

sadpapercourtesan · 27/01/2022 18:38

@Seriouslymole

Christy to me is a boy’s name - short for Christopher.
Christy as a boy's name isn't short for anything. It's a name in its own right, popular (ish) in Ireland.
Justkeeppedaling · 27/01/2022 18:45

I think most people will call her Chrissy anyway, so go ahead!

tsmainsqueeze · 27/01/2022 18:56

Absolutely love Christy , i don't think it would be shortened to Chrissy, but not so keen on Christobel.
Really though what does it matter as long as you love it.
There are some ridiculous names mentioned on here , your names are lovely.

Ceramide · 27/01/2022 18:59

It's a lovely idea. Surely your sister's partner would take it as a compliment?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/01/2022 20:49

Christabel is gorgeous imo (I prefer this more classic spelling - reminds me of both the suffragette and the Coleridge poem).

I don't think sharing the nn Christy/Kristie would be a huge issue, since you don't see them all the time and it would only be a nn for your DD. I must admit though I prefer the nn Kit/Kitty - but that's the benefit of Christabel, there's loads of options if she wants when older (including the popular Belle/Bella/Elle/Ella even).

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/01/2022 20:57

Christabel is lovely, and no problem w having a similar nn to a distant connection

SingingSands · 27/01/2022 22:17

Christabel is so unusual, I love it. One of my best friend's is called this and she's the only one I know. We don't shorten it, it's too fab to shorten!

BunnyRuddington · 27/01/2022 22:22

I don't think it would be a problem and it's a beautiful name. Definitely use it Smile

MrBoldwood · 27/01/2022 22:39

I love it.

Georgeskitchen · 27/01/2022 22:50

I love Christobel If I had a daughter I would call her that . Tried to persuade son +dil to call my granddaughter Christobel but they declined 😭

WeasilyPleased · 27/01/2022 23:22

I don't mean to be negative but it's pronounced the same. How would your ds feel if she split with her partner?

chelle0 · 27/01/2022 23:29

My names christy and I hate it. As a kid the only place I could find things with my name on was America. Always being called Kirsty/Christina/Christine/Chrissy and Chris gives me all the rage!!! AngryAngry

TheSandgroper · 28/01/2022 11:54

Christobel Mattingley - loved her. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christobel_Mattingley

Or there’s Christabel Bielenberg.

A pp said it's not too similar, it's pronounced the same, although if that doesn't bother you then choose it.

garlictwist · 28/01/2022 12:03

I'm a Christabel but known as Chrissy. Could that be an option?

Cam2020 · 28/01/2022 12:06

Christabel is gorgeous imo (I prefer this more classic spelling - reminds me of both the suffragette and the Coleridge poem).

I love the name and nn. Agree on the namesake and the poem- always wondered on how that would have ended!

INeedtobealone · 28/01/2022 12:06

I prefer it spelt Christabel, and if I was going to go for nicknames I'd probably use Bella or Belle.

emmathedilemma · 28/01/2022 15:05

Sorry but I think Christabel is awful, i think fairies not Pankhurst I'm afraid. I know one and she's a Christy.

Seriouslymole · 29/01/2022 06:31

@sadpapercourtesan - I stand corrected - I was going by Christy Moore who is Christopher.

35andThriving · 31/01/2022 17:05

I like it. The SIL thing wouldn't put me off either. It's a nice name. I do prefer it spelt Chistabel though.
