I like both names but maybe Serena better for a baby born now just because Selena/Selina was really common for my age group, there seemed to be Selinas everywhere when I was growing up (90s 00s) and because it sounds more....serene haha.
But I think both names age well and travel well.

RedRobin100 · 27/01/2022 15:39

I prefer Serena

Lemonweightloss · 27/01/2022 15:40

I agree with above about Selena. I don't really like Serena though I adolise Serena Williams ! I love Seren. ❤

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/01/2022 15:40

I like both. However, I have heard both pronounced with the emphasis on either the first or second syllable. Just a consideration.

stopringingme · 27/01/2022 15:44

Serena or Seren

StopForAMinute · 27/01/2022 15:49

Serena is lovely.

lljkk · 27/01/2022 15:55

Selena reminds me of Selenium -- you wouldn't call your kid that.

WhatIsThisPlease · 27/01/2022 16:12

I prefer Serena. I know a Serena who pronounces it suh-ray-ner rather than sur-ree-ner. Her mum was Dutch. Not sure if that's the reason.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/01/2022 16:20

@lljkk

Selena reminds me of Selenium -- you wouldn't call your kid that.
By that logic you can't use Thor, Tennessee, Samara, Francis and a load more.
lljkk · 27/01/2022 16:29

Francis is so widespread, and France is a huge thing (in human culture).
Some element names are fine, we know a Neo.
There's Beryl, Xena, Lawrence ...

I never heard of Samarium!

What element is almost Tennessee?
Thor would be brave, yes.

Seaborgium -- I dare you OP. Use that.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/01/2022 16:34

Tennessine 117

WhoppingBigBackside · 27/01/2022 18:56

Ceri?

Ceramide · 27/01/2022 19:01

Serena. Selina is too similar to semolina.

Catch32 · 27/01/2022 19:20

I prefer Serena, both lovely names. Similar would obviously be: Sabrina or Sabina

Firesidefox · 27/01/2022 19:20

Serena much prettier

GlitchStitch · 27/01/2022 19:23

These are 2 of my favourite girls names, I love the "ee" sound. I probably slightly prefer Serena but both are lovely.

FlamingoDust · 27/01/2022 19:43

Serena sounds nicer to my ears but Selina is ok

Snoopsnoggysnog · 27/01/2022 19:46

Love Serena - that was on the list if DS had been a girl

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/01/2022 21:02

Love both equally yet they have a slightly different feel to me:

Serena - more underused "British" classic, quite elegant sounding
Selena- a bit sexier/more modern sounding somehow (despite Selene's mythological heritage)

So, not sure that's helpful as I'd be very torn between the two! Selena possibly has more nn options (Lena) and perhaps more internationally used.

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/01/2022 21:05

Serena is lovely
Selina is ok

Sanchia, Saskia, Sabrina, Susannah, Shoshanna, Sylvia, Sybilla, Seraphina

I’d go with Serena Grin

Totalwasteofpaper · 27/01/2022 21:07

Both are nice.

Serena has the edge….

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/01/2022 21:13

The other thing that may help make your mind up is that Serena is unlikely to be misspelt. Where as Selina (as in Selina Kyle, Selina Scott etc) used to be the more common spelling of Selena until Selena became more popular internationally especially in the Latin American community - so now both may get used if that matters (you may even get the odd Celina too).

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/01/2022 21:18

Love classic underused Susanna/Susannah too but that has equal spelling issues - as can beautiful, elegant Cecilia/Cecelia.

Shakespearean, poetic Celia might be a lovely possibility though - another underused classy/elegant sounding "British" classic with a lovely meaning but no obvious pronunciation/spelling issues.

DramaAlpaca · 27/01/2022 21:19

Of the two, Serena.

I prefer Celine to Selena.

organicoatmilk · 28/01/2022 09:16

I prefer Selena, both nice though.
