Hello 🙂
So ... I have found out I am having a baby boy. I am in love with the name Sonny. My hubby is going along with it but I'm not sure he is sold. I'm beginning to think it's not as nice as I thought and read lots of online things about how it's nice for a child or baby but not an adult 🙈
Please give me your thoughts and if anyone has any alternatives for a boys name ending in the "ee" sound.
Thank you!!

@PattyPan

I’d much rather ‘non-Christian’ names like Ravi, Ayan, Harpreet etc than Sonny.
Ah but do you need Indian heritage to call your child such a name or is Harpreet fine on a little blonde kid with an Irish mum and an English Dad, who are both white Catholics but just 'fancied' the name? Hard to know what's ok. Personally I'd think it was a bit odd.

We know he's a son.
Give him a proper name.

Yep. Sonny is weird.

I think it's a lovely name, as a swimming teacher I know a few Sonny's / Sonnie's. It seems to be a popular name in my area. I know of a Sonnie who is 21, no sign of growing out of his name he wears it well.

PattyPan · 26/01/2022 19:11

@MerryMarigold yes that would be a bit odd. But Sonny is odd on all races and creeds!

abitfunny · 26/01/2022 20:03

Love it

abitfunny · 26/01/2022 20:04

I 100% agree with @MiddleClassProblem comment re the Christian names. There was a thread recently on favourite boys names. I can not tell you how many times the names Gabriel came up. It was every other comment!

scandikate · 26/01/2022 20:11

I really dislike it but everyone likes different names, I don't think there is anything intrinsically wrong with it. It seems to be getting popular around here (Essex) - I know of 3 under 2, two born very recently.

2bazookas · 26/01/2022 20:20

What if he isn't cute? In 16 years time he could be over 6ft tall with a deep voice. It's rather a limiting name for a grown man.

I'd give him a name that won't get him teased or mocked at school or work.

You can always call him Sonny at home as an affectionate nickname until he starts school.

I don't think so, but maybe because I know one and use the name frequently as a result. Maybe if I knew a little blonde Harpreet it wouldn't be weird either. I think names should be more flexible and not just traditional.

MerryMarigold · 26/01/2022 21:28

(My son has a middle name which was my Gran's maiden name. Culturally it sounds like a Caribbean name but he's half Sri Lankan/ white British!). It's a very cool name. Wish is been brave enough to use it as his first name.

MiddleClassProblem · 26/01/2022 22:37

I mean… I’m not white but my daughter is white passing so if I gave her a name linking to my minority heritage, and you just saw her, you might be judging to quickly.And when if she marries someone white and choose to honour her grandfather’s heritage, you would be seeing a white couple with a white child and a south Asian name. My brothers middle name is Nepalese but we are not. He was named after my dad’s best friend. Is that wrong or fine because we are all brown? Just ease up on the gatekeeping unless you are if that ethnicity, it’s not your place to say no or ask for proof. Ask for someone of that ethnicity’s opinion.

MiddleClassProblem · 26/01/2022 22:40

Sorry, grammar and spelling all over the shop!

UserBotAI999 · 26/01/2022 22:47

It's just insubstantial sounding though.
Im white, irish, lived in london for years, knew a Sunil nick named Sunny and I loved that. But his resl name was Sunil.

Sonny is too like lad or boy to me and that's why i think you're short changing a child giving him a name that is like a put down. Now listen here 'bud' is kind of how i hear Sonny. I also hear sunny like sunny day and i like it when i hear it that way.

Sux2Buthen · 26/01/2022 22:48

I had a great uncle sonny, it's a great name

Sonny was on my names list for a little boy, but I'm probably a bit biased as my grandfather was Sonny to everyone - though he was John on his bc 🤷🏼‍♀️

I also loved the name Rory. And considered Sandy (as a shortened form of Alexander).

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/01/2022 23:04

He’s wrong, you’re right.

Sonny is a glorious name.

EishetChayil · 26/01/2022 23:07

@MiddleClassProblem

Some people that seem to be called Sonny although I have not seen their birth certificates: Male Sonny Williams Skrillex Sonny Osbourne Sonny Payne Sonny Greenwich Sonny Vincent Sonny Mayo Sonny Gray

Female
Sonny Drane

Skrillex?!

RedRobin100 · 26/01/2022 23:20

I love it

Am Thinking of it As a middle name for my babe in the oven if it’s a boy

MiddleClassProblem · 27/01/2022 00:23

@EishetChayil yup

organicoatmilk · 28/01/2022 09:22

I can see why people would say that but I could definitely imagine it on an adult.

Ted/ Teddy has become popular, yet I can't see that on an adult.
