Hello 🙂
So ... I have found out I am having a baby boy. I am in love with the name Sonny. My hubby is going along with it but I'm not sure he is sold. I'm beginning to think it's not as nice as I thought and read lots of online things about how it's nice for a child or baby but not an adult 🙈
Please give me your thoughts and if anyone has any alternatives for a boys name ending in the "ee" sound.
Thank you!!

I really dislike it.
We know he's a son.
Give him a proper name.

Snorkmaidenn · 25/01/2022 17:08

I like it.
I used to work with an elderly Irish man called Sonny. Nobody commented on his name.

Buddhabowl · 25/01/2022 17:22

I like it. I know a 4 year old and a 13 year old. I don't think it sounds childish.

I would know of a few older men called Sonny - but I can't think if it's a nickname for a particular name. (Also in Ireland)
Knockoneofftheshelftowin · 25/01/2022 17:33

I know someone with a son called Sonny, he is about 16 now. His sister (big age gap between them) has a son called Sonny Boy.

Happenchance · 25/01/2022 17:33

I'm not a fan.

Other suggestions:
Sullivan nn Sully
Ernie
Jamie
Frankie
Laurence nn Laurie

UserBot999 · 25/01/2022 17:36

I would give it as a nn
Sol meaning sun could be a nn
Or maybe a nn for Seán

Or Stephen

emilyintheSE · 25/01/2022 17:37

Awful name, sorry

HacerSonarSusPasos · 25/01/2022 17:38

I don’t like it either - to me it sounds like a position in the family like mummy, daddy, baby, sonny, rather than a name.

This is how I feel too. I wouldn't use it.

Samuel, nickname Sammy?

Winniemarysarah · 25/01/2022 17:41

I’ve got a sonny op and I adore it. Mn seems to hate it for some reason. The comments I got on here when I posted about it were absolutely vile. I cringe when I see other people posting asking for opinions on it because the abuse they get over a perfectly normal name is unbelievable (and frankly bizarre).

UserBot999 · 25/01/2022 17:42

What about Soren nico?
Or Solstice nicholas So+Ni
Make a nn that makes sense

SoupDragon · 25/01/2022 17:43

@user1471604848

My first thought was Sonny Corleone from The Godfather book. It's a nice name - wouldn't stand out as weird.
He was Santino.

You could say that about the majority of names tbh when you look up the origins. My name is very commonly used in the uk but it means Christmas. It doesn’t mean it’s not a ‘proper’ name.
LadyEloise1 · 25/01/2022 17:45

I too think of it as an elderly bachelor living in rural Ireland name. Probably because my grandmother had an elderly neighbour with that name. I live in Ireland btw.
I know of a three year old Sonny so it must be gaining popularity in trendier circles Smile

Winniemarysarah · 25/01/2022 17:45

@SoupDragon his name was santino but he went by sonny. My ds was 18 months old when my partner confessed that’s who he named him after 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

I know. The point being, his name wasn't Sonny it was a nickname.

StopForAMinute · 25/01/2022 17:47

I quite like it.

UserBot999 · 25/01/2022 17:49

Santiago nn Sonny?

Exactly

It’s like you couldn’t be bothered.

Give him a decent name and use sonny as a nickname.

TrashyPanda · 25/01/2022 17:55

Or if you want a name with a diminutive ending in an “ee” sound, call him George, with Doddie as a NN.

Lykia · 25/01/2022 17:56

Do you mind it being popular? There are 3 in my secondary dc's year group.

TrashyPanda · 25/01/2022 17:57

@UserBot999

Santiago nn Sonny?
Or Santiago, diminutive Jimmy.
veryhungryhippo · 25/01/2022 18:08

I love Sonny. Wanted to name my DS after Sonny Clark. Went with Charlie in the end.

PinkEll · 25/01/2022 18:08

My dads name is Malachy but he's one of 16 , and one of the younger ones so they all called him Sonny!
He's 73 now and it still suits him :)

RuthW · 25/01/2022 18:09

Awful for any one over 3
