Hello 🙂
So ... I have found out I am having a baby boy. I am in love with the name Sonny. My hubby is going along with it but I'm not sure he is sold. I'm beginning to think it's not as nice as I thought and read lots of online things about how it's nice for a child or baby but not an adult 🙈
Please give me your thoughts and if anyone has any alternatives for a boys name ending in the "ee" sound.
Thank you!!

Where I'm from, Sonny is what someone often calls a boy when he's being cheeky. "Enough of that, Sonny!" Kind of clouds it for me. Grin

I think it's also a common nickname in the Italian American community. Al Pacino was nicknamed Sonny by his family as a kid, I think.

miltonj · 25/01/2022 18:18

Love it.

DramaAlpaca · 25/01/2022 18:40

It's awful. Really awful. Sorry.

@veryhungryhippo

I love Sonny. Wanted to name my DS after Sonny Clark. Went with Charlie in the end.
His name was Conrad. Sonny was his nickname.
RJnomore1 · 25/01/2022 18:57

What about Sanny, short for Alexander?

Aquamarine1029 · 25/01/2022 19:03

Awful.

JMPB · 25/01/2022 19:04

I love it!! One of my top choices if we are having a boy x

Amandasummers · 25/01/2022 19:06

I have a teen called sonny, I love it as much as I did when I named him it. It’s my favourite boys name ever and I don’t like my other sons name anywhere near as much 🤣

I’m surprised the amount of people that read it as “s-on-ey” rather than “sunny” though 🙄

PattyPan · 25/01/2022 19:08

Definitely not a proper name to me, and makes me think of being told off - 'now listen here sonny boy!'

What about Daniel and Danny for short?

ploopypleepy · 25/01/2022 19:09

Love it!

It’s worth considering that on MN any name that is not a traditional Christian name (names I generally hate) there are normally a high amount of posters disliking it. The exception to this are foreign names where you have to prove you are of that heritage before someone, normally white and not of that heritage, declares you are allowed to use it with their white saviour, gatekeeper approval. I know, they will come for me now but they also don’t consider that their immediate assumption that someone is white and has to prove they aren’t is problematic.

Anyway, the non Christian name things is not my experience in the real world plus I don’t agree with the “it’s an nickname, they should have the full name” concept either and nor do others around us.

I think the important thing is always how you feel about the name but also to gauge whether it’s a whim name you will end up not liking or one you will always just love.

Sorry for the long rant. It’s been one of those days and I’ve had another race issue today so I’m a bit worked up.

Another old Irish man, but in a place where "Bro" and any name with -ie on the end is normal.

Donny
Lonnie
Manny
Jackie
Paddy
Andy
Kelly
Terry
Etc

Amisilli · 25/01/2022 19:22

Not keen sorry. Seems like a name he would outgrow.

Flowerymama · 25/01/2022 20:04

kb16 · 25/01/2022 22:20

My little boy is called Sonny so I'm bias but it's my favourite name ever! Smile

Jinglebellsoncake · 25/01/2022 22:32

How is Sonny pronounced?
S- on- ee
Sunn-ee

Sorry if that's a silly question. I've only ever seen it written down

EishetChayil · 25/01/2022 22:39

@UserBot999

What about Soren nico? Or Solstice nicholas So+Ni Make a nn that makes sense

OP, do not call your child Solstice Nicolas.

DotDotDotDotDot · 25/01/2022 22:40

It’s probably not a name I’d choose personally but saying that I have very positive associations with it as I had a wonderful neighbour called Sonny when I was growing up. He’d have been well over 100 if still alive today, so it’s definitely not a new name. It could also be a nickname for names like Harrison, Hudson, Edison etc if you like that kind of name.

Thehouseofmarvels · 25/01/2022 22:40

Nickname for solomon?

isitmean · 25/01/2022 22:45

I love it. Great name. A grew up with a boy named Sonny, now in his 30's abs very, very handsome.

Kite22 · 25/01/2022 22:47

We know he's a son.
Give him a proper name.

This.

'Sonny' is what a stranger in the street calls a lad, when being friendly. It is like calling someone (an adult) 'Mate' or 'Pal'. It is to attract a young boy's attention when you don't know his name.

MerryMarigold · 25/01/2022 22:50

I only know one, who is 2. I always call him Sonny Jim! I think it's ok for an adult. You can have Oliver/ Ollie too. Barney I love. Aubrey is a bit posh but it does have an 'ee' sound!
