Joy is okay, Mercy is dire.
Clemency is very pretty.

semideponent · 25/01/2022 15:17

Don't like either. I think identifying a child with those qualities is like inviting them to be depressed or mean.

finallychangedmyusername · 25/01/2022 16:57

I must admit that not that keen on virtue names. Joy is much better than Mercy. However I do like Felicity, which could be considered a virtue name, and that goes well with Tabitha (and I love Tabitha).

I'd expect Tabitha's sister to be named:
Eliza
Imogen
Naomi
Jemima
Marina
Beatrix
Violet
Anneliese
Adelaide
Lydia
Eloise
Rosalie

Neither, sorry.

Mercy is OTT, Joy could be unfortunate if she isn’t. How about Constance?

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/01/2022 23:39

Or Serena?

ODFOx · 25/01/2022 23:47

I love Joy (One of my DDs has Joy as a middle name).
I prefer Constance to Clemency if you are after a virtue name.

Pieceofpurplesky · 26/01/2022 00:01

Mercy makes me think of Salem and witch trials.

Tabitha and Violet

Flutterflybutterby · 26/01/2022 05:53

@BrunoJenkins

Joy is better by far. I would assume Mercy is short for Mercedes, which is really chavvy. & Clemency would be shortened to Clemmy, which sounds too much like Clammy... ew!
I like abroad, there is no such thing as chavvy here Grin

Joy- it’s lovely, regretting not naming my dd it now, despite never having considered it as an option before Grin

garlictwist · 26/01/2022 06:09

Joy sounds like an old lady who runs the tea and cake at church. Don't do that to your baby.

Mercy reminds me of Hollyoaks.

thewhatsit · 26/01/2022 06:57

Joy.

Mercy is such a negative name for a child. I know it’s a virtue but it requires something bad to happen first ie begging for mercy, showing mercy, even the idea of God being merciful - ie that he forgives our sins and understands that we are flawed and imperfect .. why would you want to load a child’s name with such negative implications?

Clemency (I know you have the other thread) is better for me too. I understand it’s a a similar idea to Mercy but sounds more like a name and not just a virtue to me. Most people don’t use the word clemency to mean what it actually means, the way they do mercy.

Kate Silverton’s daughter is Clemency.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 26/01/2022 08:13

Neither...

sharkyandme · 26/01/2022 08:13

Joy

Tal45 · 26/01/2022 08:20

Joy. As I said on another thread if I heard a child called Clemency then I'd wonder if they had a brother called Leniency. Clem and Len. Clemency is for people on death row, it shouldn't be a name IMO.

crumblebug · 26/01/2022 08:25

Joy

Ellmau · 26/01/2022 08:29

Joy is lovely.

Clemency is pretty too.

BlueFlavour · 26/01/2022 08:34

Really like Joy.
But have you thought of Gloria?
Now that is a truly wonderful name. Wish I’d thought of it for dd.

KatherineJaneway · 26/01/2022 08:41

Joy

@jb7445

I like the meaning of Joy more than Mercy, but the actual sound of Mercy is far prettier than Joy IMO. Depends which is more important to you! I think I'd go for Mercy.
This is my exact feeling on the matter! Grin

I just Googled this and her daughter's full name is Clemency Florence Rose 😍😍 So beautiful!

Neither . They are names often used in quite devout Christian areas.

Mercy makes me think of Mercy Dulbottle from the Jill books

Me too. There was a bit where someone shouted “Mercy! Mercy!” And Jill thought they were being murdered.

Catfox1 · 26/01/2022 10:46

Joy but I’m going to be annoying and suggest Joyce instead 😅
