My husband is obsessed with this name and it's growing on me. It just made it to top 200 in the uk, but worried it's a bit too American?

If I heard someone say their name was Xander I’d just assume they were called Alexander & just abbreviated it tbh.

Fl0w3ry · 24/01/2022 17:34

Same as pp. it just sounds like Alexander shortened. I like it though.

ofwarren · 24/01/2022 17:38

I'm not keen. As a shortened version of Alexander maybe.

Doomscrolling · 24/01/2022 17:39

Adam and Ian’s baby in The Archers is Xander (short for Alexander)

PlanetNormal · 24/01/2022 17:41

Xander is a nickname for Alexander, not a name in its own right.

AuntieStella · 24/01/2022 17:41

Lovely name.

It's usually a nn for Alexander, though I do know one where it's a stand-alone

APurpleSquirrel · 24/01/2022 17:41

I like Xander (Buffy fan in my youth) but I'd go for Alexander with Xander as the nn just so they have more options when older.

I love the name Xander, but it does seem to be popular. I worked in a school for a while last year and there were several Xanders!
(And yes, these were using the name in its own right, NOT as a shortened form of Alexander).

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/01/2022 19:08

It's just short for Alexander. As a diminutive it's fine, but not as a full name -

Blughbablugh · 24/01/2022 19:11

I have a Xander, however he is an Alexander. I love Alexander but not that keen on Alex and so for now he is known as Xander. He can choose if he wants to be Alexander, Alex or Xander when he's older. I've found some people get a bit confused when we say his name and think it's Sander Confused Overall though we've had a lot of compliments.

Jemimapuddleduk · 24/01/2022 19:12

Love it! My nephew has this name, not shortened from anything else.

WhoppingBigBackside · 24/01/2022 19:20

I know a few children with the name. Not keen on it, but I do like Alec

cptartapp · 24/01/2022 19:27

Lots of these about now, it's not that unusual. Not keen. Prefer Alexander in its entirety.

WhoppingBigBackside · 24/01/2022 19:30

Me too.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 24/01/2022 19:31

Love it , but short for Alexander

Afolnerd · 24/01/2022 19:32

I have a Xander, his full name is Alexander but he is only really called that when he is being naughty!

There is another Alexander in his class who goes by Alex which makes life easier on the teacher.

SausageRolling · 24/01/2022 19:34

It’s on my list for this baby if it’s a boy so I obviously love it.
I personally don’t like the nickname ‘Alex’ so I wouldn’t use the full name Alexander as I think it would automatically be shortened to Alex.
I would use Xander as the stand alone name on the birth certificate.
