I adore the name and wanted it for my DC but DH really didn’t like it

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/01/2022 01:47

Beautiful and reasonably underused classic imo with Biblical and literary links. Personally prefer similar Julia and Claudia but Lydia is lovely too.

Flutterflybutterby · 19/01/2022 05:32

Mia rhymes with gonorrhea but that doesn't seem to have harmed the bazillions of Mias running around!

Lydia is lovely.

Dubgirl1212 · 19/01/2022 06:48

Worked with a girl called Lydia and she was called Chlamydia behind her back by some of our not so nice colleagues.

LaurensILikeYouALot · 19/01/2022 06:52

I know a newborn Lydia and a few who are in their 30s. It's growing on me.

TedsaidFred · 19/01/2022 07:37

I really like the name Lydia, it's on my list, I think it's simple, classic, not overused, not hard to spell although am sure people will find a way to misspell it, like everything. However, I don't like Lyd or Lydie for shortenings so that puts me off but you are happy with Lydie so then I can't see any downsides. I think the chlamydia thing will be shortlived and associated only with the really shitty kids or colleagues as pp mentioned, I don't think over the lifespan of a human this should be a reason to not use a name.

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/01/2022 08:04

Nice. Becoming quite popular at the moment.

Blue4YOU · 19/01/2022 08:35

I have a 4 year old Lydia. I love the name! (On an aside I wish I’d called her Lydia Louise rather than the middle names I did give her).

degsydoodoos · 19/01/2022 08:37

Beautiful name, it was one that I liked when I was pregnant as we found it in DH's family tree, however I didn't think it went with our surname so we didn't keep it on our list. I do love it though, so pretty.

IamMaz · 19/01/2022 08:40

I love it.
I remember 'Love for Lydia' in the late 1970's with Mel Martin. Happy days...

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 19/01/2022 08:44

I went to school wothba girl called Lydia never occurred to us it rhymes with chlamydia! We used to call her Lid or Lids but she didn't mind that .
Go for it!

AnnaSW1 · 19/01/2022 09:04

I like it, it's been on my list before but not the top choice. It's a good name.

Violetandpurple · 19/01/2022 10:06

I have a Lydia she's beautiful and I adore her name.

scooterbear · 19/01/2022 10:10

Love it

irishfarmer · 19/01/2022 10:37

I don't like it and I don't know why. I think it's the way the Ly sounds/ feels in my mouth (I know that makes no sense!!). But is a fine name, just not my style.
People saying about chlamydia, I wouldn't let that put you off. There was one in my year at school I never once heard her called that or likened it to that myself!

Skeumorph · 19/01/2022 10:40
@Skeumorph...but Lydie is fine as a short form?
Hah well I should have said... the one we knew was known as Liddy (assume that's what you mean by Lydie, though spelled like that I see Lie-Dee) - but when her mum introduced her as Liddy/Lydie, people would mishear as Libby! Which mum didn't like at all! So unfortunately she just morphed into Lid, though now she uses Lolly too - so, short forms just evolve I guess.

Still not keen on Lydia alas.

shouldistop · 19/01/2022 10:44

It's nice but I prefer Lydie

Theblacksheepandme · 19/01/2022 10:45

I love the name Lydia.

shouldistop · 19/01/2022 10:46

@frasersmummy

So long as you are not planning a move to the west of Scotland its lovely

Up here she would get called lydia kettle (say it in a Glasgow accent if you don't understand)

I live in the west of Scotland and would never have thought of that.
Violetandpurple · 19/01/2022 11:10

My Lydia gets Lulu Lydie LoobyLu all sorts.

Foxglovers · 19/01/2022 12:43

@Skeumorph

No, sorry! Pride and Prejudice probably biased me but it sounds a sly and sneaky kind of name. Also dislike that it has so many syllables for a fairly short name - it's jerky.

Plus no good short form. 'Lid' isn't great!

I know a real life Lydia who fits this description (and worse!)

Also don’t like Lyd or Lyds which the one I know gets called

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 19/01/2022 12:49

I think it's a very dowdy, frumpy name and I dislike the harsh 'lid' sound in it.

Mydogisagentleman · 19/01/2022 12:52

My absolute favourite name.
I wanted it for our dd, but husband said it was too posh and too thin

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 19/01/2022 12:53

Poor Lydia Bennet. She was 15, bored, and horny that meant she made some unwise choices when faced with a flirty rogue in regimentals.

I like the name.

DillDanding · 19/01/2022 12:54

My niece is Lydie. I love it.
