Thomas or Louis?

I can’t decide between the name Thomas or Louis (pronounced Louie) for DS2
I prefer Louis but i feel torn on which to choose! I have a couple of people I know who’s sons are called Louis. Also DS1 is called George and I’m worried about the royal siblings connection and will people think it’s weird?! I only like traditional names if anyone has any other suggestions?

I prefer Thomas

ouch321 · 15/01/2022 16:34

Thomas is my fave boy's name so def that.
And yes, people would think you a wannabe Kate.

toastofthetown · 15/01/2022 16:37

Personally I wouldn't want brothers called George and Louis. I wouldn't say it's weird but I think most would notice the connection. I might wonder if you are a bit of royalist / Kate Middleton suck-up type.

Not sure I can offer suggestions on names, as if you want traditional names with established use then I'm sure you know then all anyway. No need to remind you that the names Henry and Peter exist! Unless you are wanting to go a bit more offbeat (Ambrose, Benedict, Edmund etc.)

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/01/2022 16:40

What would you think about a William and Harry? Or a Charles, Andrew and Edward? I'd assume weird Royalist. And I think that's especially true of Louis. Realistically, I'll bet it was very rare a few years ago and shooting up the rankings now. Although I haven't checked.

There are loads of traditional names which aren't currently used by Royals.

cherryonthecakes · 15/01/2022 16:41

I would avoid Louis because of the royals. I think it's a great name though - my son is best friends with one so I'm biased.

Comedycook · 15/01/2022 16:45

I prefer Louis but considering your ds1 is George, then I think you should go with Thomas. If you go with Louis the royal connection will exist forever. It would be like calling them William and Harry...it would still raise an eyebrow today.

AyeEee123 · 15/01/2022 16:45

I much prefer Louis but wouldn’t choose it if my other son was called George.
How about Benedict, Arthur, Alexander, Zachary, Gregory, Henry, Frederick, Timothy

Interestingly that's not really the case. Louis did have an upswing in popularity after the prince was born, but declined slightly last year. Even still its usage was considerably higher around the turn of the millennium than the last five years.

Thanks @toastofthetown that's interesting!

Bemorebridget · 15/01/2022 16:55

I love Thomas!
I glanced at the post title and briefly read it as Thelma or Louise ( showing my age here!)

Classicblunder · 15/01/2022 16:58

I like Thomas, but think Louis is more pretentious than classic.

My go to for classic boys names is the Thomas the tank engine crew - James, Edward, Gordon, Henry, Toby.. less so Percy !

Junemoon65 · 15/01/2022 17:05

I love both. Prefer Louis but I think it’s a bit much with a brother called George. So if I were you I would go Thomas

dafey · 15/01/2022 17:07

Louis is my favourite boys name but I'm not sure I would have it with George

RavenclawsRoar · 15/01/2022 17:08

I prefer Louis.

TheWomandestroyed · 15/01/2022 17:19

Louis hands down.

rambleonplease · 15/01/2022 18:15

I like both Thomas and Louis. But if you are worried about the royal connection, then avoid Louis.

Other traditional boys names:
James
Matthew
Benjamin
William but again very royal.
Edward. Ditto above!

Luredbyapomegranate · 15/01/2022 19:33

I wouldn’t worry about the princes, they are popular names (although if you have a girl next Charlotte may be going too far Grin)

I prefer Thomas as it’s more of a classic (in the UK) but if I was torn I’d go for whichever is the less popular right now.

Luredbyapomegranate · 15/01/2022 19:34

Daniel
Miles
Robert
Philip

Might be other options

Kitkat151 · 15/01/2022 19:51

Thomas
Definately not Louis

Jitters22 · 15/01/2022 19:54

I love both names, so not much help but couldn't you call him both?

Thomas Louis or Louis Thomas?

wingsofabird · 15/01/2022 20:24

Love both!!! Sorry not any help

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 15/01/2022 20:29

Louis Thomas (as a middle name) sounds lovely.

pilates · 15/01/2022 20:30

Thomas

BeKindBeYou · 16/01/2022 07:10

I’d go for Thomas.

George & Thomas go really well together.

resm · 16/01/2022 10:29

We’ve just had had a newborn and called him Thomas, other contenders on our shortlist were James and Daniel. I love Louis as well, but couldn’t convince husband!
