I recently heard of an Elphinstone Dalgleish. Have also met a couple of kids called Star.

What fun/marvellous/slightly wacky names have you come across?

I knew a very old gentleman called Joe Joe. He was born in the 1920s and abandoned with a note saying his name was Joe. No surname so the orphanage wrote down Joe for both first name and surname.

@FeelingdownXmas my sister’s friend from school called her baby Rayne-Beau. I wonder if it’s the same one or if there are 2 of them. Is he a boy?

BrassyLocks · 11/01/2022 08:33

My orthodontist was called Mr. Tartar.

The late governor General of Jamaica had the very grand name of Sir Florizel Augustus Glasspole.

BrassyLocks · 11/01/2022 08:36

Yup, Goodluck Jonathan.

Names like Marvellous, Happy, Blessing, Gift, etc. are all quite common in Nigeria.

EishetChayil · 11/01/2022 08:42

I once had business with a Randy Bumgardtner.

I forgot about Judge Judge. All through his legal studies, he must have had to endure endless jokes about his name, but he had the last laugh. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igor_Judge,_Baron_Judge

I saw a poster once, no word of a lie, for a talk to be given at the university where I worked, by a Doctor Doctor. I think he would have been a medical professional, given the subject matter.

Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep · 11/01/2022 08:56

My sister works with someone whose kids are Tiger-Lily, Phoenix and Bodhi. I think the surname is fairly British standard but am often impressed at the parents' gumption. My mum would have given me hell if I'd tried anything too offbeat and - sadly for me - I care too much about what other people think.

GloriaSilver · 11/01/2022 08:58

Halcyon.

merrymelodies · 11/01/2022 08:59

As a student, I lived with a family called the Gale-Browns. We nicknamed them the Mud-Storms Shit-Storms Smile

thegreylady · 11/01/2022 09:00

I was at college with a William Wordsworth. He went by Bill. He would be in his 70s now.
My grandson was at school with a Ptolemy.

merrymelodies · 11/01/2022 09:01

@GloriaSilver That's a beautiful name. I wish I'd thought of it while pg with DD.

fairislecable · 11/01/2022 09:01

My DD was working in HR and one of the employees names was Iona Bucket this was verified on her passport.

She was Eastern European and her English was very limited we think an unkind person ‘helped’ her anglicise her name for her move to the UK.

She was a cleaner.

The author Rumer Godden has a wonderful name. As does Evelyn Waugh. Merle Oberon is another I love.

itssquidstella · 11/01/2022 09:09

@cafedesreves I also know Bunny Love and Candy Darling...

thegreylady · 11/01/2022 09:13

Also in the 80s I knew a boy called Hereward and his sister was Elfrida. The other siblings had perfectly ordinary names.

Evelyn Waugh's first wife was also called Evelyn, and as she would undoubtedly have changed her surname on marriage, she was also Evelyn Waugh. Their friends called them He-Evelyn and She-Evelyn. The marriage was shortlived, but not because of the name issue. He was notoriously irritable, though, and I wonder how he coped with the inevitable confusion and constant clarifications needed.

Blimey. So Christmas cards would read something like

Love from Mary, Bill, John, Sally, Hereward and Elfrida

Well, yes, but when parents give a baby an unusual name, it's the child who's being landed with a lifetime of spelling it, correcting pronunciation, fielding the endless questions. If parents like a very unusual name, they could always change their own.
BDavis · 11/01/2022 09:20

@Twinkleylight

I wonder if the kids with the really out there names changed it to something ordinary when they grew up? Truly Scrumptious's parents might be peeved if she changed her name to Jane!
I always wondered if she would keep it when she was older @Twinkleylight Grin That was about 15 or so years ago and if I remember rightly the girls were both in the early years of primary school so would be in their early 20s now.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 11/01/2022 09:24

I had a great aunt and uncle whose surname was Belcher. My brother and I thought it was hilarious.

ExConstance · 11/01/2022 09:25

I had my horse trained by Hartley Larishe, and once met an elderly lady who was called Hermione Rainbow.

GreenWhiteViolet · 11/01/2022 09:25

I used to know a Princess Elizabeth in whose parents wanted her to be called by her full name at all times. She later decided to go by Lizzie Grin
