I recently heard of an Elphinstone Dalgleish. Have also met a couple of kids called Star.

What fun/marvellous/slightly wacky names have you come across?

I once worked at a school with a headmaster called Mr Hankey (for those who don’t know there’s a well known South Park character called mr hankey the Christmas poo!)

I met a little boy last year called Marmaduke. I think it's an amazing name and wish I was brave enough to use . Although I do have a child with a name on this thread so maybe I am.

BlusteryLake · 11/01/2022 17:54

A very long time ago, there was a child at soft play called Polaris. I checked the signing in sheet after I could be sure if I’d heard right.

Amber17 · 11/01/2022 19:16

I went to school with siblings called Beach, Ocean, and I’m sure there were two more with similar themed names that I can’t remember!

There was a lady on the Jeremy Vine show who called her son Lucifer and had another child called Talayla-Mae Barbara Elaine Kayleigh Kelsey Jade.

scrivette · 11/01/2022 19:39

I knew an older lady, Treasure and her sister was Coral, their surname was Ireland.

DD has an extremely unusual name (rarely appears on the annual name listings) but hasn't been mentioned here yet.

I also worked with a ThankGod and a Prince Michael, Princes' Father was called Michael (not Jackson!)

A580Hojas · 11/01/2022 19:40

My dd (21) has a friend called Destiny. I rather like that.

@ElephantOfRisk

I used to deal with correspondence for older customers in Scotland and would come across a lot of patronymic naming. The women were often called there Dad's name with Ina or Ena on the end.

So, lots of Duncanina, Hamishina, Angusena, Hughina etc. Most of these women no doubt went by the name of Ina or Ena. I have several old aunts and old friends on my mum's who were always Ina or Ena and it was a revelation when I found out that it was short for something bizarre.

That's interesting. My parents (Scottish, in their late 80s) do often refer to older ladies they know/knew called Ina, pronounced Eyena. It hadn't occurred to me it might be a shortening.

I had a great aunt called Effie, which was short for Euphemia, also inflicted on my aunt as a middle name. A distant cousin was given another variant on this - Phemie. As she didn't grow up in Scotland, I've always wondered how it went for her. Not close enough to be able to ask, however.

Silas is not an uncommon name, is it? I know one in his 20s who may be a trailblazer. I had the impression it was rising up the lists.

I once met an Earl Grey who was lovely. I also spoke to someone who introduced herself as Phyllis Stein but I was never sure if she was joking. Grin

I remember a little girl on the telly named Advantage Moonshine. That’s pretty tremendous! A real dodgy character I knew through work called Ceejay Liquorice, which I thought was great.

TinyTickler · 11/01/2022 21:15

@ElephantOfRisk @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g I'm Scottish too, and I was nearly Euphemia after my mum's family friend, who was known as Phim. They went for Elizabeth instead 🙂 My brother always said people would have said 'eff off, Effie' to me all the time (hope that doesn't offend anyone, not intended to). So I'm interested I see it crop up a lot in Mumsnet suggestions!

I have 2 aunts called Rena (pronounced reena), which is originally another shortening for the -ina name. They are both officially named Rena rather than it being a shortening, but one is intended to reference Georgina as she was born on the anniversary of their Uncle George being killed in WWII, and my great-granny believed she was somehow connected to him. I've known so many older ladies who pronounce Ina as 'eye-na'.

ElephantOfRisk · 11/01/2022 21:28

A think a lot of that generation were Ina, Ena, Rena, Rita, Etta etc, all short for whatever name they had been lumbered with when named after some male relative, Or sometimes just because in every group of 20 women, you'd have at least 5 Margarets and 5 Elizabeths and need to use something to tell them apart. So then comes the Pearls and Maggie and Rita and Marge, the Lizzies, Bettys, Bets and Ellas.

Magpiecomplex · 11/01/2022 21:37

I used to know a Germanicus, which I always thought was particularly splendid!
