I am due to have another little boy next month and am really struggling with names. Me and my husband have very different opinions on names and have vetoed all of each others favourites, which is really tough. I had my heart set on Rory but he doesn’t like it. We have narrowed it down to the following, which are the only names we sort of agree on.

Aidan
Aaron
Oscar
Sean
James

The middle name is going to be Joseph. I love Aaron but am worried that it sounds very biblical when we already have a Jacob. We’re not particularly religious. I also feel like James might be weird because it also begins with a J so am slightly leaning towards Oscar. Really need some second opinions here! Thank you xxx

Aidan Joseph is fab I think. Also Oscar Joseph. James is a nice name but James Joseph doesn't run so well, although I'm not sure that matters. Anyway, they're my 3 faves.

RavenclawsRoar · 09/01/2022 19:41

I agree - Aaron or Oscar. I think I prefer Oscar out of the two. I don't like Aidan at all and while James is a nice name I personally wouldn't want the same initials (although there's no problem with this - I do know plenty of siblings with alliterative names). Sean sounds a bit dated to me. Shame your husband doesn't like Rory - that's lovely. I also thought Leo when I read your thread title.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/01/2022 19:44

I really like Aaron and James and I quite like Oscar. Aidan is ok. Sean is very dated so I’d strike that.

Aaron is the best fit. Biblical names are very popular so no one will think you are religious.

Otherwise James or Oscar, both very popular right now.

NuffSaidSam · 09/01/2022 19:46

I like Aidan best. Great name, not too popular, goes well with Jacob and Aidan Joseph gives the option of AJ as a nickname if you/he wants it later on.

SmallElephant · 09/01/2022 19:46

I really like James but I think Jacob and James are too similar - not just J initial but the Jay sound. So I'd choose Oscar.

Mumofgirls2017 · 09/01/2022 20:21

I think Oscar goes well with Jacob. James too close for me. Aidan’s fine but not a fan personally, Sean is a bit dated and Aaron is also fine but as you say also biblical.

nuggetschicken · 09/01/2022 20:40

Oscar

Mum2Be36 · 09/01/2022 21:57

Thank you everyone, this is really helpful! x

Yes Sean is the only stinker - it’s so dated, Sean is 54 and his friends are Craig and Neil.

Oscar is lovely, fab that you’ve got a really super compromise name. I’d go for that.

Don’t like Aaron really . Find James dull. Like Aidan a lot but I’d pick Oscar over it.

Skeumorph · 10/01/2022 18:46

FWIW OP I love Rory too but it’s really trendy at the moment. Oscar won’t date - always familiar but never an Ollie type overdone name.

DramaAlpaca · 10/01/2022 19:10

Well... if you already have a Jacob you can't really have a James. They have the same root, the same meaning and are essentially the same name.

The rest of the names are all good choices, just not James - gorgeous name though it is.

Off topic but I actually know a Sean who is friends with Craig and Neil 😂😭😂

Oscar is my favourite! Oscar Joseph sounds lovely x

ISeeTheLight · 10/01/2022 20:46

I like Oscar, Aaron and James. Gorgeous names; much prefer them over Rory actually.

BunnyRuddington · 10/01/2022 20:55

Boris.

PurplePizzaCake · 10/01/2022 20:57

Before I even read your thread I thought Oscar or Rory would be great with Jacob

Olga03 · 10/01/2022 21:19

Aaron - sounds very bibical with the MN Joseph
Oscar - not a fan, probably because I know far more dogs than humans with this name
Sean - simply dislike, also sounds a bit dated
James - I agree with another post, shares roots with Jacob, kind of the same name

That leaves it to Aidan, which sounds fabulous with Jacob. It's a beautiful name🙂 also flows very well with the MN Joseph in my humble opinion.

pilates · 10/01/2022 21:23

Aidan

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 10/01/2022 21:25

Oscar is too popular.

James is lovely.

cafedesreves · 10/01/2022 22:40

How about Ben?

Skeumorph · 10/01/2022 22:59

Can think of 4 Jameses under 10 near me, not one Oscar!

And certainly not any Seans Grin

user1493494961 · 10/01/2022 23:09

I know brothers Jacob and Oscar. I don't think Jacob and Aidan go and certainly not Sean.

Skeumorph · 10/01/2022 23:13

Yes Jacob and Aidan don't go. the AY sound at the front is too matchy.

Jay and Ay.

Hersetta427 · 11/01/2022 21:15

Anything but Oscar - completely saturated name in these parts

wingsofabird · 11/01/2022 21:36

I don't like Rory it's too trendy

James or Oscar are lovely
