Hello,
What do you think of the name Luigi with the middle name Isaac? My partner is Italian. We live in Britain, where I’m from. His brother recently passed away, his name was Luigi. My favourite name is Isaac. So we want to honour his brother & obviously I want to use a middle name I like. Does it go together? Would Luigi work here in the UK? Thanks in advance 😊

I think the first association for lots of Brits would be Super Mario Bros.
I personally wouldn't use it because of that.

threecupsofteaminimum · 06/01/2022 18:44

I like it.

drawthelatch · 06/01/2022 18:45

Luigi is a nice name, but I wouldn’t choose it myself because of the Mario character, it just seems like a little Italian cartoon character name to me. On the plus side, everyone would know how to say it. I guess the family link may be more significant to you than the worry about it seeming a bit silly to other children when he’s little.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 06/01/2022 18:45

People will spend a lot of time asking where Mario is.

I have the name of a character from a famous play and I’m forever being asked where my sidekick is.

It gets tedious.

threecupsofteaminimum · 06/01/2022 18:45

I'm British, aged 44and have never seen Super Mario so I wouldn't have thought so.

Tal45 · 06/01/2022 18:50

My first thought was - and his brother Mario. I would go for Isaac Luigi which I think also runs much better anyway.

Yeah definitely, thats my first and only association with the name. I don't really like the way it looks either. . Isaac Luigi sounds better.
KirstenBlest · 06/01/2022 18:56

It's fine

Blue4YOU · 06/01/2022 19:02

I’d go for Isaac Luigi (not a big fan of Luigi myself but if it’s a family name I’d use it as a middle name).

RedCandyApple · 06/01/2022 19:05

No everyone will think super Mario bros

toastofthetown · 06/01/2022 19:19

When you say that you want use a middle name you like, does that mean that you aren't a big fan of Luigi? Because if you aren't a fan then despite the meaning for your husband I don't think it's fair to use that as a first name because that's what he'll be primarily be known as, and Isaac will only be used rarely. Both you and your husband should be enthusiastic about your child's first name.

The Mario connection is very strong and with the name being that of his deceased uncle, he might feel guilt or pressure from family later in life if he wants to change it to something with less of a cultural association. Personally I'm a fan of giving a child their own names a first name and family names in the middle, but I understand that's not right for every family.

TheVanguardSix · 06/01/2022 19:23

The connotation is everything. You're honouring your son's uncle and that in itself is a beautiful enough reason to give him this name.
There is the Super Mario connection.
Personally, you could go with Luigi Isaac and still call him Isaac or Lu. I wouldn't worry too much about the connotation. Kids on a playground can make a tease out of ANY name to be honest. But truthfully, kids don't tease each other about their names nearly as much as we assume.

PattyPan · 06/01/2022 21:24

I would go for Isaac Luigi too, on the basis of the Mario connection.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 06/01/2022 21:33

I prefer Isaac Luigi

OnaBegonia · 06/01/2022 22:53

An honour name is best as middle, let the wee one have his own name; Isaac Luigi

Winniemarysarah · 06/01/2022 22:54

I don’t think it looks or sounds right at all

NannyR · 06/01/2022 22:54

Definitely prefer Isaac Luigi.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/01/2022 22:57

Op are yo u the one who was asking about Isacco the other day? So needs to be Italian first name?

Luigi is fine, can shorted to Lu BUT I'd ask if he's spoken to his parents and any other siblings before he uses his brothers name? It's a lovely tribute, but it might be hard for them to hear a lot and it's a weight for a child to carry.

I'd pick a neutral first name say Matteo Luigi Issac

BettyfromBristol · 06/01/2022 23:07

I''m too old to know anything about this Mario person. I know an adult Luigi, a lovely person with a seriously responsible job. The i I in the middle looks a bit awkward but rolls off the tongue nicely. Isaac is ok but massively popular, Luigi is much more interesting as a first name.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/01/2022 23:10

Love Luigi. Don’t think Isaac goes well with it though, sorry.
Isacco?

Lou98 · 06/01/2022 23:19

I've never played Mario Bros but it was still the first thing that popped in to my head, I think he'll spend a lot of time getting asked if he has a brother Mario!

Could you use Isaac as a first name and Luigi as the middle name instead?

FeedMeSantiago · 07/01/2022 11:26

I would also opt for Luigi as a middle name. Your DS may prefer to have a first name that is his own growing up.

Also, bear in mind that with your BIL's death being so recent it may be difficult for people to use your DS's name initially if you go for Luigi.

If you both want something Italian (note you both, not just your DP) then I would pick something neutral like Leo, Matteo or Luca as a first name and use Luigi and Isaac as middle names.

Or, if you use Luigi to honour your BIL as a middle name, pick Isaac or something not Italian as a first name.

user1493494961 · 08/01/2022 14:35

I think your child should have his own first name and Luigi as a middle name.

BaconBaker · 08/01/2022 15:19

Love it!

Hugasauras · 08/01/2022 15:22

I think it works better as a middle name. I immediately thought Mario and Luigi and Mario is still a v popular game with today's kids. When we went for DD's flu jab recently they had a picture of Luigi up there.
