Leni isn't pronounced Lay-ni or Lenni. It's German and pronounced with a long eh sound. A sound not available in English.

Lenni is easier for English speakers.

ofwarren · 07/01/2022 08:05

It's hard to choose which one is nicest because both middle names are lovely but Lenni is horrid.

NellieBertram · 07/01/2022 08:11

Leni (Lay-nee) or Eleni (short e - Eh-len-ee) are both more commonly used as girls names than Lennie.

Winniemarysarah · 07/01/2022 10:05

Ignore all the dickheads op. I had the misfortune of telling Mn that I called my ds sonny. Apparently it’s ‘disgusting and vile’ and I’m ‘a bit thick’ for using it because it’s not even a name, it’s just the word for son. Never mind that it’s hundreds of years old and an extremely popular name in multiple countries 🙄

Winniemarysarah · 07/01/2022 10:06

@MadameFantabulosa

Leni would be pronounced “Layni” though, which is much better than Lenni.
No, Leni would be pronounced exactly how it’s spelt.
busyeatingbiscuits · 07/01/2022 10:11

The 'e' sound in Leni is not pronounced exactly as written by English speakers.

thebigpurpleone · 07/01/2022 10:15

Lenni is awful.

elelel · 07/01/2022 10:23

We haven't decided if it will be Lenni or Lennie yet but the main reason for the post was to settle votes on a middle name, not be told how awful a name I have chosen 🙄

I think it's because they don't 'go' iyswim. The middle names are stunning classics, Lenni really is quite the opposite.

FWIW i don't dislike any of the names individually but together it's a no.

I know a Greek Eleni who uses the nn 'Leni' and pronounces it like the English Lenny. Maybe it has regional variations?
busyeatingbiscuits · 07/01/2022 11:05

Yes, there's quite a big regional variation between English, Greek and German Grin

Mumsnet will only back traditional names. And SOME old person names. But only some. Definitely white names.

Nature names, modern names, quirky names, surnames, colours, adjectives, abstract nouns, anything from a Black naming tradition, anything coded "naughty child" (working class)... Mumsnet gets its judgey pants on. I find Mumsnet to be really valuable for a lot of things, but other stuff you must take with a gigantic pinch of salt.

I really don't think either you or the OP need to worry yourselves about what Mumsnet thinks of your kids' names. It is very very limited in this regard. I know of so many kids called Sonny or Sunny, and Leni/Lenni really isn't an unusual girls' nickname across many parts of Europe. They're lovely names.

ladycarlotta · 07/01/2022 12:20

PS yes Greek will pn it Lennie as we would, the name Eleni is pronounced Eh-LEN-ee, not Eh-ley-nee.
Similarly the Norwegian name Lene (LEN-uh) doesn't use the Ley sound either.
In Germany they would say He-ley-na or Magda-ley-na but they still don't really stress the 'ley' in Leni that hard.

TLDR: Leni pn Lennie is really normal.

AgeingDoc · 07/01/2022 12:23

I'm going against the grain. I like Lenni. But then I'm a big Stevie Ray Vaughan fan and it was the name of one of his guitars, and one of his classic songs, named after his then wife, though she spelled her name Lenny and it was short for Leonora.
Regarding middle name, I like them both with a mild preference for Sophia. If you use Olivia, just check the initials don't spell anything that might make for a disliked nickname - always worth considering if you have a middle name that begins with a vowel.

Blubells · 07/01/2022 14:11

No. In German it is NOT pronounced ley or lay.

Lena in German a NOT Layna.

Op, I like Lenni or Lennie Sophia best.

Snorkmaidenn · 07/01/2022 14:30

I love Lenni also, she's your daughter, so your choice.
One man's meat is another man's poison.
I'm sure she will love her pretty name when she'd older. Flowers

hollie29x · 07/01/2022 14:55

Thank you to everyone that has been kind about our name choice

I never asked for opinions on wether anyone liked the name Lenni as our minds are already made up, why someone would take the time to tell me it's 'awful' etc I really don't know.

Surely that yours opinion - I don't recall a rule book that states what names go and don't go?

Sonny is a lovely name. I regret asking now tbh! But thankful for people like you who have been kind enough to respond positively x

How are you pronouncing the name, as I was reading it like Lenny the boy's name? Might make a difference on what middle name to use

Bitlady · 07/01/2022 15:15

I can’t believe how rude people are. I’ve seen plenty of names I dislike on here, but unless a poster is specifically asking “tell me honestly, what do you think of the name X?” it’s just nasty to post purely to say a name someone has chosen is “awful” etc.

Op, I really like the name for a boy or a girl. I think Sophia goes with it the nicest.
