Baby boy name question - Please advise

Hello,

I am currently expecting a baby boy and I and DH have decided that the name "Asterio" is the one we will go for.

The name is spelled as As-terr-ih-o and not As-teer-ih-o.

It's a Greek name and I appreciate it sounds weird in most British ears.

Firstly, can you please tell me how you would pronounce the name Asterios if you saw it somewhere written?

Secondly, we are thinking of using a short name that is Stergio. Do you like Stergio better? Would you keep the "Asterio" or "Stergio"?

Finally, an honest opinion on both names would be much appreciated!

@SeanChailleach Haha... I know Asterix and Obelix but I can not think of Asterix as a serious nn! I can only think of it as a nn for fun/bullying at school by other kids.

To me Asterix sounds similar to Fred Flinstone, Papa Smurf, Ariel or Simba!

I wouldn't name my kid like that... sounds funny!

The G in Stergios is strongly pronounced not like Y. Also, it's not the g of "golf", it's the g of "George" .

It can lead to mispronunciations I think ...

@Lottle Is there a Stellios from Britain's got talent? wow! I just googled it and I only found a Stavros!

By the way, Stellios could potentially be derived by Asterios but I personally find the link not as strong as Stergios.

Asterios is pronounced as Astaire-eeee-os

A (as in apple) -steer-rio is how I would pronounce it and as a nick name Asti or Ste, I can't imagine it being shortened any other way.

Love both of them! I would probably go with Asterios but once told how to pronounce I don't see you having problems with either

Asterios is nice. It does remind me of Asterix the Gaul but in a good way. We love the Asterix stories in our house.

I see Aster as a very feminine name as it's a flower. I much prefer Asto as a diminutive.

Finally, Asterios is nicer to my ears than Stergios.

In my accent it would come out as as-stereo

Hi there. I really like Asterios, Aster for short. I'm not keen on Stergios, it's a little harsh. Is there a sibling that would impact on what you choose ( you don't have to say if it's outing)

I like Asterio! but not stergio. Sounds like ''Dirge'' not even sure what dirge means, but I feel like it's not good and sterg rhymes with it.

No, the siblings would not impact on what we choose.

We are just trying to best nn for Asterios so he can survive in the UK without having issues because of his name.

It looks like most people prefer Asterios to Stergios. Also, many said to leave it as Asterios and let it be. He can choose his nn in the end...

It's just that we don't want to make his life miserable because of his name!

I think I may be thinking of easy jet Stellios rather than dancing Stavros actually....

Personally I'd pronounce Stellios Stell-eeee-os but I don't consider myself an authority on these matters!!! Good luck with everything baby wise!

ah-STER-yos I knew one years ago was how he said it.

It is a video game not sure how popular not one I play.

Asterio sounds a bit more modern - Europeam than Asterios but i like both much better than the other name.

These names reminds me of smthing cool, universal like Asteroida. Definitely masculine sounding and unique, go for it :)

Great name OP. Aster and Rio are also great nn's.

Asterios is a lovely name and I would say most people in the UK would have heard of it and can easily pronounce it. I have worked with five Asterios in the last five years - two at once on one occasion! You can’t really help your nickname as that will probably happen at school - they may call him Terry! I’m not as keen on Stergios, but I think that’s because I love Asterios! If only I was Greek and could use the name (I’m probably the least looking Greek possible so would be very odd!!).

Hopefully, his friends, colleagues etc. will like the name Asterios too and he won't have any trouble in the future. Fingers crossed!
