Isabelle, Isabel or Isobel?

Just that! Which spelling do you prefer? It’s for a middle name so won’t be used in class etc.
Thanks and merry Christmas all!

I also love the Frank Turner song Isabel so that would be my inspo x

TheBeautifulSouth44 · 22/12/2021 23:58

Isobel is a lovely spelling

DickMabutt73962 · 23/12/2021 00:22

Isobel

LegArmpits · 23/12/2021 00:30

Isabel, as in St Clare's.
*Disclaimer, I'm drunk.

DietCokeChipsAndMayo · 23/12/2021 00:33

I have an Isobel, although she’s generally just Izzy (or IzBiz) these days

Isabelle is too many unnecessary letters and Isabel makes me want to say a soft S sound, so Isssssabel rather than Izzzzabel if that makes sense

Cas112 · 23/12/2021 06:16

@Coffeeshopcookies

Regardless of how you spell it, loads of people will end up writing it as Isabella! Even though they hear you pronounce it, they will stick that a on the end.
My sister is an Isobel and this has never once happened 😂😂
ApolloandDaphne · 23/12/2021 06:30

Isabel. It's my middle name and that's how it is spelled. I like it better than my first name.

Jobseeker19 · 23/12/2021 06:35

First one .

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 23/12/2021 06:42

Which ever one you choose it will be misspelled her entire life on a regular basis .

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/12/2021 07:21

In our street we have an Isobel, an Isabel and an Izobel! All aged between 12-20.

LuckyMum3 · 23/12/2021 17:47

Isabelle is softer & prettier IMO.

kitkatsky · 23/12/2021 17:52

Isabel

Princessbelle7 · 23/12/2021 17:55

Definitely Isabelle. Isabelle is the prettiest out of all the spellings in my opinion.

Faretheewellmyfairyfay · 23/12/2021 18:06

I prefer the first and the third spellings, and which looks better depends on the names either side. If the name is already quite long, or has some difficult spellings in it, definitely go with Isobel. If it's very short, like Kate Isabelle/Isobel Green, then the longer one will look nice. Otherwise, either.

Fifthtimelucky · 23/12/2021 18:11

Isobel, but Isabel also OK.

I think Isabelle is a bit much (though for some reason I do like Isabella).

VanillaAndOrange · 23/12/2021 22:37

Isabel

FoxyLoxx · 24/12/2021 13:18

Thanks all. That’s narrowed it down to Isabel or Isobel 😂 We have live in Wales and have Welsh/Irish/English connections but not Scottish, so probably Isabel. Her first name will be Welsh, so I think the spelling for the middle name needs to be clean. I have six weeks left to decide! Happy Christmas everyone Xmas Smile🎄

@Pemba

People say Isobel is the Scottish spelling, but I find it a bit confusing as I thought the Scottish version of Isabel was Ishbel?

Ishbel is the Scots form of Isobel, but Isobel was also used. Historically there was no fixed spelling for it (or any name!), so there are more than 300 different spellings of it in the records. The middle letter could be a, e, i, o, or y, depending on the registrar, or no middle vowel at all.

It may be that no other country used an 'o', which might account for people regarding that as the Scottish version. But with 300+ precedents, any spelling could be the Scottish version!

My favourite: Isbald.

Pemba · 24/12/2021 15:31

@HoratioNightboy thanks for the explanation, interesting.

FoxyLoxx · 25/12/2021 07:31

@HoratioNightboy thank you so much! You’ve just decided it. Isobel it is. Isbald is tempting but… No 🤣 Xmas Grin

Another vote for Isobel, which is also my DD's middle name.

Monday55 · 25/12/2021 08:27

Isabelle but I also like Isabella, sounds more exotic.

Esspee · 25/12/2021 08:30

Friend Isabel always got “is a bell necessary on a bike” type teasing at school. So based on that I would go with Isobel.
