Favourite nn for Elizabeth?

I'm starting to quite like Elizabeth, mainly due to the abundance of nicknames. My favourite is Beth I think. Someone suggested Tess could also be nn? What would your favourite nn be? Also, do you think naming your baby Elizabeth might make you sound a bit royalist??

Beth is my favourite. If DS had been DD that would have been his name

Ohjustboreoff · 16/12/2021 15:35

We have an Elizabeth. She is either Effy or Aofie (As in E-for-Elizabeth). But I've heard Bitsy as well which I love.

WhoppingBigBackside · 16/12/2021 15:35

I like most of them:
Bess
Bet
Bette
Betty
Betsy
Eliza
Elsa
Lisa
Lily
Libby
Lisbeth
Liz
Lizzie
Liza
Elsie

And remember, Isabel/Isabella etc were also originally forms of Elizabeth, though of course they are thought of as separate names now.

Mind-blowing range of versions here:

and here:

I once met a (very nice) woman whose name was the Polish form of Elizabeth, but she was always known as 'Ela'.

Also, do you think naming your baby Elizabeth might make you sound a bit royalist??

Only if you nickname her Lillibet.

As to the many and various other names - I think they suit different personalities. Lizzie Bennet, Beth March - they're the right NN for each.

Salamander91 · 16/12/2021 16:26

My nana always went by Lil. I didn't actually know her name was Elizabeth until she died Blush

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/12/2021 16:56

Nope, doesn't make you sound like a royalist - Elizabeth has masses of namesakes as it's completely timeless (only girls name to have stayed in the most popular/common names lists since the 1300's to the present day!). Having said that, my fave nn for it is Bess - as in "Good Queen Bess"! (Elizabeth I). Second choice nn would be Elsa, although it's gone a bit Disney now.

Betty , nothing wrong with being named after our Queen, she’s a remarkable woman.

50ShadesOfCatholic · 16/12/2021 17:06

Libby

I love Elizabeth. My favs from it are Lizzy and Betty.

The dog is called Betsy.

VanillaAndOrange · 16/12/2021 17:43

I like Liz for adults but I'd probably use Lizzie at least until secondary school.

@DaisyWaldron

I like Bess and Betsy, but I also know a French Elizabeth who is known as Zab or Zabette which I love.
LOVE Zabette.
BiscuitLover3679 · 16/12/2021 18:04

Beth or Libby.

I really don't like the Z part of it, for for reason.

MadeOfStarStuff · 16/12/2021 19:42

Elizabeth known as Libby is my all time favourite name

I wouldn’t assume royalist unless you called her Lilibet for short

Seriouslymole · 16/12/2021 19:50

I have just realised how many Elizabeths I know IRL but they are all called different things so I know:

5 Liz’s
1 Beth
1 Bufty
2 Lizzies
1 Biz
and my Goddaughter who just goes my Elizabeth.

Seriouslymole · 16/12/2021 19:50

by Elizabeth that should say

KittytheHare · 16/12/2021 19:58

Lizzie is my favourite nn.

Tess is 100% a nn for Teresa, not Elizabeth.

Hoolihan · 16/12/2021 20:01

My daughter is Lizzie, also love Betty and Betsy. Not as keen on Beth or Libby.
