Favourite nn for Elizabeth?

I'm starting to quite like Elizabeth, mainly due to the abundance of nicknames. My favourite is Beth I think. Someone suggested Tess could also be nn? What would your favourite nn be? Also, do you think naming your baby Elizabeth might make you sound a bit royalist??

Nancy was originally a nickname for Anne, not Elizabeth

BessMarvin · 16/12/2021 13:09

Bess Smile

Beth isnt a nickname of Elizabeth, that's stealing! Beth is it's own name - Bethany. Very cute name.
Since when?
OKScarpetta · 16/12/2021 13:18

I have a 6 year old Elizabeth, who is known as Bizzy (or Biz). We loved the huge number of nn options, and tried out quite a few. She often gets called Lizzy to start with, but she’s not too bothered (and her grandad calls her Bizzy Lizzy).

I’ve loved Libby since Neighbours back in the day.

I know an adult Buffy who is Elizabeth on her BC, but has forever been Buffy as her older brother couldn’t say Elizabeth & just called her Buff.

Elizabeth Scarlet was going to be my girl's name if I'd had one, I just love it. The thing I like best is that you can have so many different nicknames. I think a Beth is quite different from a Betsy (my two faves) but I also love Eliza. I think go for it.

(Although I don't think Tess is a nn for Elizabeth is it? It's a gorgeous name on its own though.)

DaisyWaldron · 16/12/2021 13:27

I like Bess and Betsy, but I also know a French Elizabeth who is known as Zab or Zabette which I love.

Quick, go tell Beth Tweddle, she obviously doesn't know her name.

Beth Broderick and Beth Orton might like to know too.

I like Beth and Elizabeth.

As for sounding Royalist, there have been 2 queens called Elizabeth, there are many more rulers called Henry / George / James and I doubt many people give it a second thought.

WakeUpLockie · 16/12/2021 13:49

BUFFY.

No that’s not my fave but I think it’s the most tremendous 😄

Love Libby and Tess. Tess Daly is Helen Elizabeth so I guess that’s where she gets Tess from!

I knew an Elizabeth that went by Ellie!

Pemba · 16/12/2021 13:56

So many short forms of Elizabeth, more than any other name probably. My favourite is Beth (of course it's a diminutive of Elizabeth - have you never read Little Women? - although it could also derive from Bethany or Bethan.). I also love Eliza and Bess. Tess is not from Elizabeth, it's normally from Teresa, although often given as a stand-alone name these days.

Very classic name, I don't think it would particularly mark you out as a royalist as Liz II is hardly the sole Elizabeth out there!

caringcarer · 16/12/2021 14:14

Tess is a non for Teresa or Theresa.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/12/2021 14:16

I think of Beth more a standalone name so wouldn't use it myself as a NN for Elizabeth.

Libby as a small child and Lizzy as a teen but usually NNs just evolve of their own nature

HotHointheavo · 16/12/2021 14:18

Betty or Betsy

portandchocolate · 16/12/2021 14:20

The only Libby I've ever known was an Olivia

Lindy2 · 16/12/2021 14:20

I like Beth.

I also like Bethan and Bethany as stand alone names.

Bahhumbugtoyoutoo · 16/12/2021 14:20

Ettie

Fontella · 16/12/2021 14:21

My auntie was Elizabeth Mary but all the family called her Lily.

justaddcandlelight · 16/12/2021 14:22

Eliza

harmonyhall · 16/12/2021 14:24

That's my name and im a Lizzy to most and a few ppl know me as Liz from years ago. That being said at work I'm always Elizabeth

Doublethecuddles · 16/12/2021 14:31

Zibby, I know of 2 and there is a 60 year gap between them!

I like Elspeth which is the Scottish version of Elizabeth.

PraiseBee · 16/12/2021 14:32

@Flutterflybutterby

Tess isn't a nickname of Elizabeth? Elizabeth has enough nicknames, no need to make them up Grin

I like Betsy, Betty, Eliza, and Lizzie is growing on me

It defo is
Pemba · 16/12/2021 14:45

Nope it isn't, Tess is from Teresa. Perhaps some people are mixing up Tess with Bess, so that's why they think it could be short for Elizabeth.

Having said that, I suppose you can refer to yourself, your child by any name you want, or any nickname.

RAOK · 16/12/2021 14:49

Libby or Bess

MeatyRvita · 16/12/2021 14:56

Libby or Betty
Not keen on Lizzy or Beth

Houseofvelour · 16/12/2021 14:58

My SIL is called Elizabeth and my children call her Aunty Betty
