Traditional- Robert, John or Edward

With my daughter, I knew straight away what to call her and never wavered and still love her name. I am having a boy in a few weeks and have no idea! I think it's better to go traditional if I am unsure than something I might regret hence thinking either Edward, John or Robert. I'm not so keen on George. Do you think they are acceptable names? I wish I could just stick. When I first found our I was having a boy I had slightly more unusual names but I've gone off those. Also considering Dominic

I liked Edward, Dh wouldn't have it as was to English (he's Scottish) he said no to all the names like George, Albert

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 09/12/2021 18:27

I know quite a few small Edwards. I love Robert, actually.

KatyAnna · 09/12/2021 18:31

I like Robert a lot. Also Edward, nn Teddy. Not a fan of George, John or Dominic.

DidgeDoolittle · 09/12/2021 18:35

I have a 30 year old Edward. I still love it.

Lamont77 · 09/12/2021 18:35

Robert is nice.

Some more traditional names you might like:

Matthew
Luke
James
Henry
Harry
Jacob

Helpstopthepain · 09/12/2021 18:38

I love Edward. Also love Edwin as an alternative.

James was on my boy list, it’s strong and classic.

Fivebeanchilli · 09/12/2021 18:40

I don't like Robert. I know a couple of little ones who go by Robbie.
I don't like John either but I love Jonathan. Jonny and Jonty are nice nn's.
Edward is lovely.
Dominic is gorgeous.

MirandaBlu · 09/12/2021 18:46

All the names you've mentioned are traditional, classic, and acceptable.

I like Robert best out of your choices, but I think it's out of fashion for now partly because it was especially popular in the '50s-80s along with diminutives like Bob, Bobby, Rob, Robbie, Robin. John, too, suffers from being a kind of default English-language boys' name for a long time - similar to Ann(e) and Mary for girls.

Some more classics:
Alexander
Andrew
Arthur
Benedict
Charles
Christopher
David
Nicholas
Oliver
Patrick
Peter
Philip
Stephen
Thomas
Victor
William

Also useful to think about whether you like the likely NN to go with the name you choose.

Robert: Rob, Bob, Bert, Bertie
John- Johnny
Edward- Eddie

Jenacles · 09/12/2021 18:53

My youngest is a Robert, with the middle name John! It's a lovely name, though we often shorten it to Bobba

astonvanilla · 09/12/2021 18:59

I have an Edward! He is an Edward but I know of an Eddie, Ted and Teddy

WhoppingBigBackside · 09/12/2021 19:38

I like all three but would pick John or Robert as there have been lots of babies called Teddy recently.

John wins because it won't get shortened

DramaAlpaca · 09/12/2021 19:40

I like Robert a lot and it's unusual these days.

I also love Dominic, another underused classic.

Theforest · 09/12/2021 19:45

John. Also know as Johnny. Which is very cool and unusual for a child.

toastofthetown · 09/12/2021 20:08

Of course they are all acceptable names. They are all in the top 150, so in high to moderate use. John is my favourite. It's so elegant and classic to me. Edward is very popular at the moment so if you feeling self conscious about your choices then you might feel better having company. Maybe if you wait until you meet him one might feel right then.

Vursayles · 09/12/2021 20:10

Robert or John. Timeless classics.

dangerrabbit · 09/12/2021 20:11

John

Jingers5 · 09/12/2021 20:15

Are you a fan of the Kennedy family op 😁

MissHoney85 · 09/12/2021 20:18

I actually really like John. It's such a solid name and really underused these days, even though only a few generations ago it was so ubiquitous.

newterritory · 09/12/2021 20:20

I have a James Edward - still love it 13 years on!

Bumpsadaisie · 09/12/2021 20:22

I think you should go the whole Kennedy homage and call him

John Robert Edward Patrick

😀

roadwarrior · 09/12/2021 20:24

John is a strong and classy name imo.

Grumpyosaurus · 09/12/2021 20:25

John is an excellent and underused name due a comeback.

Robert is making a comeback.

If you like Edward, how about Edmund?

Sourwolf · 09/12/2021 20:27

Robert's a great name.
Not so keen on the others,

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/12/2021 20:33

I love John, due a revival. Also like Robert, esp nn Robbie.

Way too many Edwards, so I'd ditch that.
