Scandinavian boys' names

Baby due in May will have DH's (very English) surname, but we would both like to recognise my Norwegian heritage by picking a Scandinavian first name.

Thor is out because of the Marvel connotations, which is annoying as it was actually my great uncle's name and I really like it!

We both like:
Magnus
Torsten
Torvald (I prefer the Thorvald spelling but probably best avoided for reasons above!)

I like Soren and DH likes Arne, but we disagree on those. Any other suggestions?

@DogFacedWoman Torquil makes me think of Torville and Dean, for some reason!

@AnnaMagnani I imagine Soren would be anglicised in pronunciation. DH really isn't keen so I think it's off the table anyway, sadly. Stellan is really growing on me, though!

Another vote for Torben here. It's a lovely name and also could be shortened to Ben or Tor/Torbs???

itssquidstella · 07/12/2021 22:01

@Underthestairsbears I really hate Ben (sorry to anyone who has a Ben) though. I prefer Torsten and Torvald to Torben, I think.

Fellow Scandi here! I really like Aksel, Magnus, Linus and Torsten

mistermagpie · 07/12/2021 22:36

I have a Magnus (we're not Scandinavian but Scottish and it's quite popular here) and it's a great name. I don't think of Gus being a nickname for it though like a pp said, the letters are in the wrong order!

I love Thor and would have used that for my second son if I could have got away with it. You have some great names on your list.

sageandbasil · 07/12/2021 23:10

I like Soren as well actually!

Luredbyapomegranate · 07/12/2021 23:55

I like Torsten
Also Stellen
How about Leif?

Quite like Soren but for some reason it sounds like a girls' name to me..
I have a irrational dislike of Magnus

peaceinourtime · 08/12/2021 00:37

Leif or Soren.

HundredMilesAnHour · 08/12/2021 00:58

I have some male Norwegian friends called:

Ragnar
Vegar
Eiler

And I'm assuming these 3 names won't work so well in the UK:
Snorre
Are
Berger

Shoobydooer · 08/12/2021 01:09

Love Magnus, that would be top of my list if I ever had another! Do love Scandi boys names.

Ragnar
Lars
Jonas
Simen
Mikael

Lotgreenwood128 · 08/12/2021 01:19

Many of these names will be mispronounced here. For instance, my old boss’s name is Knut and he was called Mr K Nut here! Arne again not pronounced well here. Torsten…same. Jonas - pronounced as J vs scandi J..
The ones that made sense here: Erik, Joachim, Fredrik, Magnus. I like Magnus. Even Lars is not pronounced well here.

Lotgreenwood128 · 08/12/2021 01:20

And I love Liv for a girl :) What a great name!

itssquidstella · 08/12/2021 07:01

@Saralyn I used to have an enormous crush on an Eirik so although I love it, I feel like it might be unfair to DH to add it to the list 😂 I quite like Sigurd too.

@Leeloo1233 hei hei! I do like Aksel but I teach one, so it might be a bit weird...

Also like Ragnar and Oskar. Thanks for so many great suggestions!

I also love Viggo but some friends have a little boy called Viggo and it would feel like stealing their name.

Karsten. Roald. Morten. Henrik. Martin (nice mix of both Anglo and Scandi)

GerbilCurse · 08/12/2021 07:23

How is Magnus pronounced in Norwegian, the Danish pronunciation is totally different to the English?

RestingPandaFace · 08/12/2021 07:29

I used to work with a Thorsten who was lovely and I’ve always loved the name.

If you love Torsten / Thorvaldsen I wouldn’t be put off by the Marvel connection if you are Norwegian, it was yours long before it was Disney’s! I think Thor would be a pretty cool nickname for a little boy!

I also love Stellan though.

RestingPandaFace · 08/12/2021 07:30

Torvald not whatever the heck autocorrect just came up with!
