Scandinavian boys' names

Baby due in May will have DH's (very English) surname, but we would both like to recognise my Norwegian heritage by picking a Scandinavian first name.

Thor is out because of the Marvel connotations, which is annoying as it was actually my great uncle's name and I really like it!

We both like:
Magnus
Torsten
Torvald (I prefer the Thorvald spelling but probably best avoided for reasons above!)

I like Soren and DH likes Arne, but we disagree on those. Any other suggestions?

I wouldnt look further than Magnus. Really like it. I also like Anders (I believe thats Scandinavian) probably because I coached one who was a sweetie.

BlueFlavour · 07/12/2021 18:25

I really like them all Smile
Great names. Love Thor and don’t think of Marvel.

SufferingJet · 07/12/2021 18:27

Stellan

itssquidstella · 07/12/2021 19:00

@SufferingJet I like Stellan! Stella was on my girls' list, actually.

@SnowdropFox I’m glad you like Magnus, it is definitely my current favourite :)

I love the name Tarjei.

Magnus is a great name.

Notyouraveragecupofcoffee · 07/12/2021 19:47

They're all so nice.
I can also think of Lars, Nils, Øivind, Joakim, Knut, Marius, Ruben.

Forgetaboutme · 07/12/2021 19:51

I can't be sure if these are Norwegian as it was Sweden I heard them...but I like:

Kasper
Mattias
Joachim
Henrik
Fredrik
Niclas

itssquidstella · 07/12/2021 20:10

@Forgetaboutme my cousin's little boy is called Kasper!

I like Henrik and Frederik but I have cousins called Henry and Frederick so they're probably too close.

Swedish blokes I know:

Janne (yarnay)
Jens (yens)
Henrik
Eric
Peter
Christian
Anders

Didn't realise I knew so many, lol

elfran · 07/12/2021 20:17

Magnus nn Gus is an all-time fave of mine. It's perfect. ❤️

I also love Stellan, Leif and Anders.

timoteigirl · 07/12/2021 20:33

I think Magnus is meh like giving the name Michael for a baby.
Soren makes me think of Kierkegaard.
If you think not Thor what about Torben (Thorbjorn) It means Thor's bear (bjorn)
Erlend would be really traditional and a very Norwegian name.

Look at other options here: www.babyverden.no/navn/jentenavn/
Aksel Nils Rasmus Rolf Elias
Do you mind if it is not pronounced correctly? carla.umn.edu/lctl/VAVA/audio/norwegian/male-names.html
Loki?

LynetteScavo · 07/12/2021 20:42

I really like Lars

timoteigirl · 07/12/2021 20:43

MissyB1 · 07/12/2021 20:43

Magnus is a lovely name.

Lightningrain · 07/12/2021 20:50

I once met a little boy called Torben and thought it was a lovely name. I like Magnus, Kasper and Anders too.

itssquidstella · 07/12/2021 20:54

Thanks @timoteigirl

Not Loki because of the Marvel associations again. Torben is nice but I think I prefer Torvald. Will check out the link you posted!

I’d go with Thorwald - if he is a little marvel fan he will thank you, and if not you can pronounce it like Tor and it will be a cool non-marvel name.

YuleHaveAWonderfulChristmas · 07/12/2021 21:07

Magnus and Thor are awesome names

GemmaRuby · 07/12/2021 21:15

Love Magnus and Stellan.
Not heard Torsten and Torvald before but they sound nice.

Not heard of Soren before - I would have assumed it was a girl’s name. But people will learn quickly and it sounds nice.

Not keen on Arne - is it pronounced like Arnie? I’m just seeing arse to be honest (sorry).

NotMyDayJob · 07/12/2021 21:16

I worked once with a Torsten (he was Norwegian) and he was a very nice man so I've always liked the name

itssquidstella · 07/12/2021 21:30

@GemmaRuby Arne sounds sort of like Arnie, yes (it's more Arn-uh), which is one of the reasons I don't like it!

@NotMyDayJob I do like Torsten, it's staying on the shortlist!

List now:
Magnus
Torsten
Torvald
Stellan
Soren (if I can persuade DH!)

We have no Norwegian connections, but had Ole on our list - ended up taking it off due to the football connection but mainly the fact we had no Scandi connections!

I still love it though!

Tomthumbsbigbum · 07/12/2021 21:39

I know a Torben. I think it's a great name.

AnnaMagnani · 07/12/2021 21:45

Can an UK population pronounce Soren? My heritage is a different Scandi country and Brits would not be able to pronounce Soren from there.

My parents went to a huge amount of effort to give me a pronounceable name and totally failed. Spelling - don't even go there Grin

Torsten and Stellan are lovely.

DogFacedWoman · 07/12/2021 21:49

Torkel or the more Anglishised Torquil?
