Hi everyone

Wondered what people’s opinions are on this name for a boy? I am white and my DP is Asian. It means great importance in Arabic

It’s also a really famous Indian dance song, and the name of an Indian singer, so probably not one to use if your OH is Indian or Pakistani.

HotChocolate16 · 07/12/2021 14:30

Didn’t know that!

My DP is British Pakistani :)

I know a British Indian toddler called Shaan, which I've always liked.

Apparently it means Smile, which suits him.

Saisong · 07/12/2021 14:37

It might be mistaken for the Welsh girls name Siân, which is often pronounced in England as Sharn
(the N.Wales pronunciation is different, more like sh-aan)

ExPatHereForAChat · 07/12/2021 14:46

Might also be confused for the Irish girls name Sian (pronounced Shan).

Lol depends if the kid is likely to get announced with ‘jeete hai shaan se’ everytime he walks into the room by his extended family. If not then go ahead.

I like Shaan. I wouldn't be worried about it being confused with Sian. I have a colleague who's son is called Shan, I think it might be spelt Seán (I've never seen it written), anyway it's a nice name and easy to pronounce

Happy1982ish · 07/12/2021 16:14

Truthfully
I think of a Ken Loach documentary
Poverty stricken run down Glasgow estate
Single mother bringing up 4 children on minimum wage, the youngest called Shaan

Baggingarea · 07/12/2021 16:14

Shaan is lovely but you should know "shan" means "unfair" or "mean" on the east coast of Scotland

emmathedilemma · 07/12/2021 16:47

I'm guessing it's pronounced Sharn not Shan?? I like it.

toastofthetown · 07/12/2021 16:59

Shaan is a lovely name. I don’t think the similarity to Sian is a problem at all.

HotChocolate16 · 07/12/2021 19:47

Thank you all! Really appreciate the responses and feedback :)

Not familiar with this name but I like it; it has a nice sound.

midsomermurderess · 09/12/2021 10:29

Meera Syal and Sanjeev Bhaskar have a son called Shaan, for what it's worth.

HotChocolate16 · 09/12/2021 10:47

Thank you :)
@midsomermurderess not sure who they are???

We are leaning towards the name :) just worry about the confusion with Sian

Bobbybobbins · 09/12/2021 10:53

We have a few Shaans at my school - I really like it.

HotChocolate16 · 09/12/2021 11:04

@Bobbybobbins does anyone have confusion with their names sounding the same as Sian?
And do they get picked on or anything for it sounding like the girls name? 🤦🏽‍♀️

Sorry just over thinking! Want the perfect name.

@HotChocolate16

No I don't think so. It's a very multicultural school/area so we have a vast range of different names (though no Sians- possibly because we are on the opposite side of the country to Wales?)
