Reia or Indie?

Hi ladies,

I’ve struggled with a baby girls name for as long as I can remember. I’ve never particularly loved any, and now that I am 32 weeks pregnant with a baby girl I’m in panic mode 😂 my DS is called Sonny, which my partner chose and I happened to love. This time my partner isn’t too bothered on names so it is more or less down to me.

I loved Maia, but my ex best friend has just called her baby girl this.

The middle name for Indie would be Rae, as it is my sisters middle name and I think it flows nicely. ‘Indie Rae’ I would also add in my mothers name who sadly passed away which is ‘Tracey’ as a second middle name.

Reia obviously wouldn’t be able to have Rae as the middle name. So it would just be Reia with Tracey as the middle name.

Any suggestions would also be amazing!

I prefer Reia.

SummaLuvin · 06/12/2021 21:22

Is Reia pronounced Ray-A? Assuming so, Tracey and Rae/Reia are sonically very similar due to the 'ray' sound in the middle. For me this would put me off Indie Rae Tracey, or Reia Tracey, but given how meaningful the name is to you this might not be important

I quite like Indie, but prefer Reia. Both pretty, slightly unusual, but feel familiar.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/12/2021 21:22

Of the two I'd have to pick Indie despite it's trendiness (I personally prefer India) as I think Reia will be constantly misspelt. Raya would be the more common spelling (or classical Rhea, but then you risk people pronouncing it "rear" Smile).

Another option to honour Rae might be Aurelia ("aw -RAE -lee-ah"). Or you could perhaps consider fellow Greek Goddesses Gaia or Theia if you like Maia?

Marcipex · 06/12/2021 21:46

I like Indie, but much prefer India.
India Rae Tracey is very pretty.

I don’t know how to pronounce Raia. Is it Ray-ah or Ree-ah?

flowertot19 · 07/12/2021 00:11

I also liked India but my partner has put his foot down on that one as he knows someone called this 😢

It’s pronounced Ray-ah 😊

I don't like Indie but think Reia Tracey is nice.

Hairyfriend · 07/12/2021 01:04

Thank you for pronouncing it (spelling out), as I wrongly assumed it was pronounced Rhee-aa- like the bird!

I like Indie and she will be known Indie Surname. Middles names are only used on official documents and not in day to day use. I do, however, think of Indiana Jones and it being a masculine name (he was called Indie!). Clearly not a connection for a baby though.

Just check if the the initials spell anything odd- I..R...T... Surname.

Snugglybuggly · 07/12/2021 01:12

Neither

KosherDill · 07/12/2021 01:15

Indie is not a name for an adult woman. Think of her future. Give her a dignified name and then any childhood nickname you wish.

This.

I don't like either of them. I think you're trying too hard to be different - or your husband is.

Joban · 07/12/2021 03:11

I’ll say I’m not a massive fan of either but really would strongly favour Indie of the two.

Reia will have mispronunciation issues- my first reaction was to think diarrhoea.

MerryMarigold · 07/12/2021 03:16

I like both but I prefer Reia.

I know a Sonny whose sisters are Minnie and Maisie.

Alfixn · 07/12/2021 03:19

Oh I really like both! And I'm normally quite a traditional name liker.
There's something particularly beautiful about Reia.

GiltEdges · 07/12/2021 03:26

Indie is my dog's name so I'm struggling to imagine it on a child... like a PP I also prefer India.

SummaLuvin · 07/12/2021 09:13

Just a heads up on the Raya spelling. The most recent Disney princess is Raya, but pronounced Rye-A, so this may invite pronunciation issues anyway - especially given how popular Disney films are.

Also love Aurelia and Gaia as posted by PP.

daisypond · 07/12/2021 10:21

I strongly dislike Indie. Reia is better but it does just look like you’ve picked something really similar to Maia.

MerryMarigold · 07/12/2021 12:44

All I would say, OP, is that I allowed MN to talk me out of a name and I sorely regret it. It so suits my DD. Go with your own heart ❤️!

EurghCobwebs · 07/12/2021 13:20

Would you not spell it Raya? You're going to have many people mispronouncing it

Edenember · 07/12/2021 15:31

I prefer Indie. I’ve always liked it, it’s on my list but It’s pretty universally hated on here. I’ve met several strong and elegant older ladies who go by Indie as shortened forms of other names e.g Inderjit, so I don’t have the common / unclassy association at all. I like it short for Indiana.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 07/12/2021 15:35

I really like both - I think I prefer Reia but it's a tough call!

Tal45 · 07/12/2021 15:40

I'd spell Reia Raya if that's how you're pronouncing it. When I saw it the first thing I thought was diaReia (I know this isn't how diarrhea is spelt exactly just made me think of that).

IWasFunBeforeMum · 07/12/2021 15:43

Rae is a ridiculously popular middle name now, wouldn't touch it.

TheVanguardSix · 07/12/2021 15:49

I prefer Rhea (this spelling).
I like Indie too, but prefer Rhea.

dannydyerismydad · 07/12/2021 16:10

Isla has a similar vibe and combines elements of your two choices. Might that work?

Joojoonuts · 07/12/2021 16:16

I read Reia as Righ-a so I would def go with Raya or Rhea spelling if that's how you want it pronounced.
