Traditional names for boys that aren’t super popular?

I love unusual names - for example I was set on Cosmo, but DH absolutely hates it.

DH prefers traditional names like George or Harold, but for various reasons can’t use Harold and half of little boys seem to be George or William or Henry! Any traditional names which are slightly less popular? I am struggling!

We have similar taste op! I also was big fan of Rupert, Raphael, Robin (my dads name!).. DH not so keen so we have compromised on Hugo 😆Middle name Robin for my dad.
He’s due 22nd Jan. Saw his face on a 3D scan and it confirmed to me that he is a Hugo 😂 felt like it suited him! Congrats xo

@AngelinaFibres you make a good point.

@Toastfiendish ah this is the kind of information I need, although how sad - I really love Raphael. I guess rafferty has become very popular so it was only a matter of time…

@KirstenBlest thank you! I think I like that.

@sjxoxo how lovely that he looked like a hugo! I love the name - sadly it really would just feed my father’s ego too much to name my child after him Grin

@DrPrincessFluffyToYou, use darkgreener to see how popular a name is

names.darkgreener.com/#roman shows that it's a name getting very popular

the ons baby name site will show popularity over the years

Something like Philip, Simon, Peter, Michael, Anthony, Mark, Andrew will be less likely to be popular

I love Wilfred...

Wilf, Will, Freddie or Fred for short.

DrPrincessFluffyToYou · 03/12/2021 20:52

@KirstenBlest that is such a useful tool, thank you. I think all the names I like are on the up!!

One of my favourite EVER names was Thaddeus when I was pregnant with my eldest to be shortened to Teddy.

DH vetoed it instantly and I don't think I'd ever have the balls but I think it's a beautiful name!

Maybe if we ever get a dog...

I'd even say Jack nowadays. I don't know a Jack under the age of 12!

My DDs preschool class there is a Ronnie, Hugh, Cormac, Nathan, Patrick. Personally I love Christopher, Gerrard and Arthur. Also like Simon, Joseph and John.

@Arethechildreninbedyet really? There's loads where I live in the 4-11ish age range!

RebeccaCloud9 · 03/12/2021 20:59

I teach an Alan (aged 8). It really suits him!

ICalledYouLastNightFromGlasgow · 03/12/2021 21:00

@Arethechildreninbedyet you obviously don't work in a primary school. There are hundreds of them

DrPrincessFluffyToYou · 03/12/2021 21:01

There are loads of kids called Thaddeus?! I would never have guessed that. Drat, thought that might have been a goer

It is. It is easy to think a name is unusual because you don't know any, but that covers England & Wales, and names can be popular in a region but not popular generally or vice versa.

I don't know any baby Olivers or Olivias for example, but they're the top names. I know lots of little Sophias and Sebastians

Take into account how popular the name has been for a few years because your DS will be in schools with other age groups and then at work with others.

There are usually quite a few Daves, Pauls, Richards, Alans, Mikes Ians, Steves and Marks where I work but there won't be in 22 years' time

AnotherOneWithNoGoodName · 03/12/2021 21:04

Traditional, not biblical and not super popular (AFAIK!):
Michael (uncommon these days!)
Patrick
Charles
Philip
Robert
Adrian
Felix
Ernie

Elias
Linus

Atticus
Axel

Laurence
Florian
Roscoe
