Traditional names for boys that aren’t super popular?

I love unusual names - for example I was set on Cosmo, but DH absolutely hates it.

DH prefers traditional names like George or Harold, but for various reasons can’t use Harold and half of little boys seem to be George or William or Henry! Any traditional names which are slightly less popular? I am struggling!

Some recent boys names in my circle are Roman, Arthur, and Paul, which are all old but uncommon

DrPrincessFluffyToYou · 03/12/2021 19:47

That’s the kind of thing, but a little biblical for me not that I’m at all fussy

I also like Orson, but DH isn’t too sure on that one. So many beautiful girls names we both agree on!

@seafog I love Arthur but it’s now in the top 10 I think!

Simon
Robert
Peter
Michael

I’m essentially thinking names that were common 40 years ago as they’re rare now!

DrPrincessFluffyToYou · 03/12/2021 19:50

Clarence is a good one! I will suggest to DH. Also like Stanley but sadly can’t use as a cousin already has the name

Uncommon for children now, or uncommon in all generations?

There are very few babies called Paul, Philip, Richard, Sean or Ian - but you might know a lot of older adults with these names.

If you're looking for things that have never been top of the charts, how about:
Patrick
Vincent
Miles
Anthony
Robin
Adrian
Francis

To go really traditional — John? Kids just aren’t called John any more but you can’t go wrong with it!

DrPrincessFluffyToYou · 03/12/2021 19:53

I love robin - that’s right up my alley, thank you!

I’m ideally looking for something not common in any current generation (excluding the very elderly perhaps!)

Roman and Arthur are mega popular! Arthur has been for years.

Robert, John, Peter, Philip, Daniel, Matthew - all classic but currently unusual - I like John and Robert nn Robbie especially.

Or a more unusual but fairly classic - Gideon, Lucian, Jerome, Jethro, Joel, Joss, Silas, Julius, Miles,

Popular ish but not overused - Laurence, Alistair, Rafe, Marcus, Elijah, Joseph

DrPrincessFluffyToYou · 03/12/2021 19:56

Frederick, Hector, Ernest - like all of those and will suggest!

How do you pronounce Amos @Justgivemesomepeace?

OP posts:
OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 03/12/2021 19:57

People keep mentioning David, but that's still in the top 50 - it's top 10 in some areas of London. So depending where you are, it may not fit the bill!

Jeremy
Caspar
Alec
Gregory
Amos

I love Rupert but my father claims it’s too associated with a cartoon bear!
