Ideas for names that mean Mercy (either gender)?

Would Mercy itself be a bit too out there?

I know a Mercy. Female.

Mercedes.Anna, Hannah, Joanna, Jane, Jean, Joan etc

Very personal preference, but I wouldn't choose Mercy or anything that means that. Isn't it just teaching them that they have to be forgiving and grateful all the time 🤨

I know 2 women called Mercy - both are of African descent. One of them hates her name and thinks it makes people view her as someone who should always be helpful.

As in 'have Mercy in me'? Why on Earth would you saddle a child with a name that has such a strong meaning, and not a particularly positive one!

I think Mercy is a lovely name (as long as it's not short for Mercedes) though I love an uncommon virtue name.

I think Hannah means merciful or maybe God is merciful as it's a biblical name and although well known, I've always thought Hannah is a lovely name

As in having Mercy (compassion) for others.

Anna is already used.

I think Clement / Clementine means gentle and merciful.

Anna/Hannah means grace. If you wanted the same meaning you could chose Charis, Grace, John, Ian, Jonathan, Joanne or Joanna.

Well if it's good enough for Madonna!!

Clemency

I like it as a potential nickname for Mercia.

I’ve known a few Mercy’s over the years, all of Nigerian origin.
I’m not generally keen on virtue names anyway, they always seem a lot for children to live up to.

I taught a Mercy who was lovely (uni age) but she hated her name. Per PP she had Nigerian heritage.

I like Mercy, but I am surprised by what others think it means: to me it is compassion.

Not keen on Mercy as a name.

I do not like it as a given name. It's like Prudence or Charity, just overtly big ideas for an individual to carry off.
Grace is a bit better.
As a Mercian I would not consider Mercia a as a given name either: it's like Wessex or Kent.

I’m not keen. I do like a couple of other virtue names but this is a bit too Puritan for me. Clemence is a more wearable alternative but the pronounciation would be butchered in the UK.

It's definitely a "virtue name" used in Puritain communities in (what became) the USA. One of the main characters in the novel The Witch of Blackbird Pond, set in Connecticut colony in 1687, is Mercy. Of course not as popular today as similar names like Faith, Grace, Hope. And I wonder if now it would be confused with Marcie, short for Marcia?
