Everybody knows a Dave…

…right?!

How many do you know?
DH is a Dave (born early 70s), and in our circles, there are —5– 6 others we can think of.

But we don’t know of any child Daves, or baby Daves!
We know one who is in his early 20s.

Are there any little Daves in your neck of the woods?

What is your opinion on the name David - (rightfully!) a dying breed, or due a revival?
What are the Daves in your lives like? Top bloke or annoying git?
DH constantly sways from one to the other!

David is still in the top hundred and there were over a thousand baby Davids born last year. I don’t know any of them though, but I also don’t know any Olivias under the age of 18 so maybe they are in the same place.

I’ve been in meetings where a third of people present are called Dave/David. Names with that level of popularity are far less likely now than the 60s.

Porthia · 24/11/2021 07:36

I think David is a lovely name. I don’t know that many of any age actually but the ones I do know are very nice people. Definitely due a comeback!

dropitlikeitsloth · 24/11/2021 07:58

David is a good solid classic name it’s due a comeback. All Daves I know are nice guys. I mean Dave Grohl is a Dave - says it all Grin

OldTinHat · 24/11/2021 07:59

I had a car called Dave. Does that count??

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 24/11/2021 08:01

3 family members including DH, and three colleagues. Two more in our group of friends.

I actually emailed someone the other day and all it said was TOO MANY DAVES Grin

fluffythedragonslayer · 24/11/2021 08:05

When I taught reception we had a David. He would be 8 or 9 now I think.

My 75yr old uncle is David. Top bloke. And Ive got a lovely friend called Dave (mid 40s)

A baby called Dave would be awesome.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/11/2021 08:08

We have so many in the family we have to clarify which one is being referred to.

Swearwolf · 24/11/2021 08:11

I know two primary school age Davids. Interestingly, neither have English parents. Possibly a name that's fallen out of fashion here but still quite a good international option.

Mouk · 24/11/2021 08:13

I know 3. 2 in their 30's, one in his late 40's.

MrsMoastyToasty · 24/11/2021 08:13

The only Dave I know is in his mid 20s. He's a good solid bloke.
I expect there will be a revival of saints names after so many Archies/Maidens.

Dolan · 24/11/2021 08:14

There are lots of boys called David at the school I work at. Perhaps up to 10 in some year groups. It's a very popular name in some communities.

ApplePippa · 24/11/2021 08:21

I know several Davids right across the age spectrum. Oldest is in his 70s, youngest is 6.

Its a good solid classic name.

JammyRedRooo · 24/11/2021 08:30

My dad is a Dave and so are both of his next door neighbors.

So is my great uncle, and DHs uncle. And my boss.

My parents have so many friends where the DH is Dave its actually funny. Sandra and Dave. Sally and David. Christine and David etc...

And I went to school with a handful!

bigbluebus · 24/11/2021 08:33

I live somewhere where it's a bit of a standing joke that if you can't remember the name of a man over a certain age you just call him Dave and there's a good chance you'll be right!
I don't know any young Daves or Davids though and up until Covid I was a volunteer working with Primary aged children.

thewhatsit · 24/11/2021 08:36

Funnily enough, I’ve only ever known one Dave but a fair amount of Davids (NEVER shortened).
I think David is due a revival but the issue is the nickname Dave..

cookiemonster2468 · 24/11/2021 08:38

I don't know anyone called David. I like the name, though.

Sparkletree · 24/11/2021 08:44

I know a 9 year old David.
Also about twenty other Daves and Davids in their 40s/50s/60s

idontlikealdi · 24/11/2021 09:10

One, 45 and it seemed old fashioned when we were at school. I really like David but I'm of the age when all I can think off is 'baby David'

I also know a pig called Dave, it really suits him.

Pug not pig!
EileenGC · 24/11/2021 09:13

I know lots of little ones with the name, especially nursery aged, and I have a 12yo cousin named Davy and a 15yo student named David. I also know of adults of course.

All the children are in England as well, but born to first or second generation immigrant parents, if that makes a difference? They’re normal children names in their parents’ countries of origin, and the parents are less likely to care or know what’s trendy and what’s dated in the UK right now.

WildStallyn · 24/11/2021 09:17

I only have one Dave friend now but I've known loads throughout my life. Can't imagine it on a baby but that's because I associate it with 40+. It's not a terrible name though and I'm sure if I did know a baby Dave it would grow on me.

Approximately half the men I know are called Paul.

girlmom21 · 24/11/2021 09:19

I've got two uncle Dave's and had a grandad Dave.

Everywhere I've ever worked has had at least two that I've worked with closely.

I don't know any young Dave's/David's though.

And now I've read Dave so many times it doesn't look like a name anymore Grin

SaffyWall · 24/11/2021 09:19

One of my children has David as a middle name - largely because my husband insisted that 'everyone knows a good egg called Dave'.

There are a couple of Davids at our primary school along with a raft of other traditional names which seem to be making a comeback - Andrew, James, Matthew, Nicholas, Richard, Peter can all be found in Yr3 at the moment!

RobinPenguins · 24/11/2021 09:21

I was once in a meeting of 5 people where I was the only one not called Paul.

VoyageInTheDark · 24/11/2021 09:28

My dad is a Dave and when I was growing up it seemed like half of the adults I knew were called Dave. I knew one at uni but don't know any under 30 now. Davy would be quite cute as an alternative and would fit in with the Ronnie/Reggie/Archie sort of names
