I knew a girl with this name years ago. She pronounced it ill-ow-na.

Emphasis on first syllable.

At least, that's how the Ilona I knew pronounced it.

Ooh, a mix. I absolutely love this name, but keep fixating on the fact that neither ‘ill’ or ‘loner’ are nice sounds separately. But, I’m also not sure I like il-uh-na, with emphasis on the first syllable, as much. Feels a bit nothingy.

I always thought the L was silent - so it sounded the same as Iona!! I worked with one a few years ago, clearly I was saying her name wrong the whole time...

No, I like Iona, but it seems to be getting more and more popular. I like Iolanthe, but I’m not keen on Iola, purely because that -ola suffix reminds me of a body part. Like areola.
