DH can only think of one name to suggest and I don’t like it

Booked for an ELCS just over a week before Xmas. We already have a DD and are expecting a DS this time but finding boys names so much harder! DH is being irritatingly chilled about making a short list and although I have several names on my list I’m not sure if any of them are quite right… Opinions and any other suggestions please?

My list:
Nicholas (but is it too cheesy for a baby born just before Xmas?)
Benjamin (not sure if I like the “jam” in the middle but I guess he’d get Ben most of the time)
Arthur (probably too popular)
Oscar (also probably too popular but might be my current top choice anyway)
Dylan (worried people will assume we have strong feelings about Bob Dylan)

DH’s list:
Rory (I’m not a fan and would mean baby has the same first initial as DD)
Claims he would consider any of the names on my list except maybe not Nicholas but I suspect he’s just trying to shut me up Blush

Nick is probably the most boring name on earth followed by Chris then Sam.

FreeBritnee · 11/11/2021 14:00

I really like Rory.

AreYouRightThereSkippy · 11/11/2021 14:04

I'd still go with Rory. Rory and Rose is fine and tbh, how often do you refer to them as a pair and for how long? They won't live together for most of their lives.

Noel
Saul
Lester
Douglas
Ormond

@Beseen22

We have a Ruaridh, similar to Rory but not so rhymey with Rosie. Admittedly Scottish though so more popular up here.
@Beseen22 if I ever have a DS that is one of my top names but spelt Ruairí love it.

I like Nicholas, I don't think it is too cheesy for a Christmas baby. I know you are trying to avoid it but, Noel is a Christmas name, I like that too.

How about Rhys? (reese)

resm · 11/11/2021 16:03

I really like your shortlist. I think Nicholas is a beautiful name and would find it rather fitting for a Dec baby rather than cheesy. Also love Oscar and Rory. Oliver has a similar vibe I think?

WhoppingBigBackside · 11/11/2021 17:37

Rory and Rosie are too similar. If you had a third you'd have to call him or her Roly or Romy

TatianaBis · 12/11/2021 15:14

There’s a Rowan and Reuben on another thread, we also had an Olivia and Oliver.

So I don’t think Rory and Rose are too similar.

Arthur is a lovely name OP. Popular names are popular for a reason! All your names are nice though. Rory is actually my least favourite!

SirChenjins · 12/11/2021 15:20

Nicholas - Not too cheesy at all. Nick is great, Nico is very Italian wide boy.
Benjamin - love it and Ben
Arthur - not keen, very dull imo
Oscar - it's OK
Dylan - overused, like Finn was a few years ago
Rory - not keen at all, and it's a difficult one to pronounce

Magnus is the best name in the world (sadly vetoed by my DH) - pick that one!!

I think all these names are fine but it’s not helpful that your husband only has one name on his list. Can you ask him to come up with a top 5? If you each have a top 5 you have a lot more to talk about

SE13Mummy · 13/11/2021 18:56

What about other names ending in an 's' sound?
Barnabas
Cassius
Fergus
Francis (could be Frank as a nn)
Otis
Thomas
Tobias

I think James goes well with Rose but not sure about the potential for Rosie and Jim...

Skeumorph · 13/11/2021 20:45

I love Rory but it's SHOOTING up the charts, along with other R names.

Isn't it funny how people fix on the same names, the way a trend works?

Your DH doesn't know it but he's the equivalent of a bloke about 15 years ago saying 'How about Evie? That's nice and unusual, don't know any of those!'

Shame as I love Rory. But also, you CANNOT have a Rory and Rosy - that's beyond twee.

I would go for Oscar if you love it - it has so much character - if you cant get Nicholas through.

How about Jonathan, nn Jonty? Bit Rory-ish with the short form, but Nicholas like in the full name?

Skeumorph · 13/11/2021 20:47

Oh and also - one name is not a list. Not how it works sorry. You don't get to suggest ONE name with the implication that THAT'S IT THAT'S MY NAME.

If he can't come up with another 4 at least, he's not submitted a list.

BeKindBeYou · 14/11/2021 19:11

I love Nicholas! My favourite from your list by far :)
