Gabriella

I never thought id consider an -ella name given how Ellie and Ella have been enduringly extremely popular since I was a kid. Annabelle, Arabella etc do absolutely nothing for me but I keep coming back to Gabriella. Both Gabby and Ella don’t excite me but don’t really offend me either, just meh. But Gabriella is a bit of a mouthful? I realise it’s a bit dated too. But I like it! I dunno, what does the hive mind think?

yes, it's a good name.
don't worry about shortenings.

AuditAngel · 05/11/2021 23:38

I have a Gabriela (Spanish spelling) shortened to Ela, apparently loathed by some Grin but I didn’t want “gobby Gabi”

The Italian spelling is the same as the English, with 2 L’s. The Italian Gabriella in our family is shortened to Gabri

AuditAngel · 05/11/2021 23:39

The nicest bit though, is that it is a name everyone knows, can say, but isn’t over used,

Bellyups · 05/11/2021 23:40

Beautiful name!! I’m not keen on the shortened Gabby/Gabi though

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 06/11/2021 00:30

Absolutely love it and really like the nn Gigi too Smile

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 06/11/2021 05:15

Just to digress the Italian spelling of Gabriella can also be Gabriela as I know an Italian family that uses the single l spelling.
At the end of the day both spellings (either one L or two) are lovely.

GrandPrismatic · 06/11/2021 05:57

I love the full version and it was a close contender for our girls. We ended up going for very similar style names with shortenings I wasn’t keen on - but we have drilled the full name version and it has stuck (so far!)…id do the same if we had number 3 (who would DEFINITELY have been Gabriella…alas we’ve stopped at 2 😁)

weekend2021 · 06/11/2021 06:07

Gabriella is ok but hate the shortened version (Gabby) Reminds me of Gobby Grin

WakeUpLockie · 06/11/2021 07:21

Ooh I like Gabri and Gigi too! Great responses thank you!

It's lovely.

Brie or Brielle might be alternative nicknames although quite trendy.

DontKnowMyOwnName · 06/11/2021 08:01

It was on our shortlist and in fact our new DD was called it for a few hours while we tried it out!

It's a beautiful name but we just couldn't get past Gabby as a nickname which we didn't like. We would have tried to make Brie her nickname I think, but you don't know what other people will do.

In the end we've gone with an 'El...' name so she'll get Ellie etc which I didn't love either but I can live with.

MadeOfStarStuff · 06/11/2021 14:23

I love it and I love Gabby as well

I think it would be a shame to use a lovely name like Gabriella and then shorten it to something so popular as Ella which I find rather boring

Yourstupidityexhaustsme · 06/11/2021 14:25

Beautiful and really underused name.

I knew a couple at school - both were called Gabby.

However one became known as Gobby Gabby.

Cbeebiesrehab · 06/11/2021 14:39

Gabriella is beautiful and I’d 100% use Gigi as the nn!

ReggaetonLente · 06/11/2021 15:35

I have one. Her nana calls her Gigi, and her sister calls her Bella, or Alan Hmm she couldn't manage her full name as a toddler and it sounded like Alan.

We sometimes call her Gabi or Gabs. But mainly Gabriella Smile

miltonj · 06/11/2021 15:47

I love this name.
I do think it wouldn't suit everyone though. And I usually don't feel that way about names, normally I believe names just take on their beholder. But this name is so pretty, feminine, angelic that I think you'd have to see your daughter before naming her this. My daughter for example, is absolutely gorgeous (not biased of course), but she looks too boisterous and cheeky to be a Gabriella! Does that make sense?

WakeUpLockie · 06/11/2021 19:04

Hah that does make sense. Like how Louises are always blonde. But I think of Gabriella as quite a cheeky, funky, badass name!
