Well I assume it's a dog as you know what he/she looks like, unlike a baby who is not born yet. So yes, Spot is as good a name as any.

Why not? Almost every dog I know has a human-type name now: Molly, Darcie, Joey, Theo, Archie. So dog names for children, at least it won't be 'in the top ten' or one of 3 in his year group.
