Hamelin

As in the pied piper? Confused

Maireas · 30/10/2021 14:43

As in Hamelin Plantagenet, owner of Conisbrough Castle in that era.

MerryPumpkinmas · 30/10/2021 14:58

Fair enough. Everyone would think pied piper though. I have a degree in medieval studies and hadn’t heard of him.

Maireas · 30/10/2021 15:03

True. He was the half brother of Henry II and was responsible for the construction of the stone keep castle at Conisbrough.
It is a very unusual keep, the only other one is at Mortemer Castle in Normandy.

Maireas · 30/10/2021 15:05

You can tell that my visit inspired me, and I really like the name! His wife was Isabella, although it's sometimes written Isabel.
They were descendants of the de Warenne family who were rewarded for being on the Conqueror's side at Hastings.
