What do you all think of the name Emmeline? Nn Emme / Emmie.

Does everyone pronounce it "Emma-Leen"?

Trying to pic some girls names for our list after my favourite was vetoed. Heard this band a few years ago and keen to hear current opinions on it...

Thanks everyone

My mum's a Emmaline and is pronounced 'Emma-Line' but most call her Emma for short. I love the name and my DC1 also has her name.

Hi, I love it, my French aunt is called Emmeline.

We wanted to call our daughter Emmy and were so so close to doing so, she even had it on her hospital bracelet.

However, we very quickly realised that Emmy was a nn for Emily which at the time was the most popular girls name in UK and we wanted a more unusual name like our other children so decided against it.

We still really like it and wonder if we had called daughter Emmy (now 20)! how things would have panned out.

I think if you love the name and don't mind people asking if it's a nn for Emily then go for it.

Excitedforxmas · 25/10/2021 23:33

Love it

KimDeals · 25/10/2021 23:34

I really love it!

DramaAlpaca · 25/10/2021 23:35

It's a bit long for me, but it's a beautiful name. I'd pronounce it to end in -een.

MrsFin · 25/10/2021 23:37

Mrs Pankhurst was Emma-line.

WarmthAndDepth · 25/10/2021 23:38

Emmeline is a lovely name with positive associations. But I don't see why it would be pronounced Emma-leen? Em-meh-leen, surely, like Emmeline Pankhurst.

parttimemary · 25/10/2021 23:39

I love it. People might mishear it as Emily when they first meet her and she will have to correct them. I don't think that's a huge issue though.

WarmthAndDepth · 25/10/2021 23:39

MrsFin, 😂 No way! Oh well, every day's a school day! Thank you for the correction.

MayorGundersonsDogRufus · 25/10/2021 23:41

Really lovely

ILoveAnOwl · 25/10/2021 23:43

Beautiful name.

Fairybobbin · 26/10/2021 04:37

Beautiful but I would say Emma-line

Lightswitch123 · 26/10/2021 04:42

Lovely name

Em-meh-leen pronunciation from me too

daisypond · 26/10/2021 07:32

Ends in -leen. I find it a bit dated in style, a bit flouncy Victorian. The Emmelines I know are 30. However, it’s OK.

crumblebug · 26/10/2021 07:33

Eh-mer-leen

crumblebug · 26/10/2021 07:36

Actually no- Eh-mer-lynn

Or Em-lynn

SophieHatterPendragon · 26/10/2021 07:37

Beautiful it was one of our top names because I loved Emmie but we went with Imogen for Immie

GoodnightGrandma · 26/10/2021 07:38

I’d pronounce it Emma-line.
I love Emmie for short.

HelloDulling · 26/10/2021 07:39

Lovely name. I know two, both under 10. Both Emme for short.

I think they both find it gets misheard for Emily.

Lostmyway86 · 26/10/2021 07:41

Absolutely love it. I have two girls and wish I'd used it

frazzledfragglefromfragglerock · 26/10/2021 07:43

I would also say Emma-Lynn but it's a beautiful name, you should go for it!

I also know an adeline (Adda-lynn) which is also lovely. (Nn Addy)

SadWife2020 · 26/10/2021 08:49

Beautiful, Emmie is great too and the suffragette connection is wonderful too. Girl power!

TheSpiral · 26/10/2021 08:54

Emma-leen and Em meh leen are practically the same in my accent, I’ve been sitting here mouthing them quietly to myself! I would pronounce Emily Emma-Lee for example.
SummaLuvin · 26/10/2021 08:54

I like it alot.

My instinct would be to pronounce Eh-mer-leen (how it is said on Harry Potter audiobooks and never met one in real life)

Feilin · 26/10/2021 09:05

Ill be the only naysayer so far. I am an Emmeline (pronounced Emm-e-leen) and for 41 yrs Ive constantly been called things like Emily Emma Evelyn Avaline etc. Frankly its a pain . Rarely does it get spelled correctly never mind pronounced or even called my actual name. My difficulties however are unlikely to be yours as the name is increasingly popular these days.
