What are people’s thoughts on Seren?
My DH is Welsh, but we live in England.

Yes, it's beautiful.

daisypond · 25/10/2021 15:26

No. It’s cringey and will date really badly- it’s like Dawn.

daisypond · 25/10/2021 15:26

And it won’t be pronounced correctly.

Kindertonguehappierlife · 25/10/2021 15:28

I don’t personally like it but it always seems so popular on MN!
Go for the name you love

lmpeachment · 25/10/2021 15:30

Seh-ren. Is that how it's pronounced?
Very pretty

CaffiSaliMali · 25/10/2021 15:33

It will be mispronounced as Serrun. Generally any Welsh name ending in 'en' or 'an' will be mispronounced as 'un'.

So bear that in mind - my Mam failed to predict the mispronunciation of my Welsh name in England and it annoys her no end. So think about whether it will bother you or not.

KirstenBlest · 25/10/2021 15:34

Nice name for a pony. Would you name a child Star?

PanicBuyingSprouts · 25/10/2021 16:44

I know a Seren in England. I think it's nice.

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 25/10/2021 16:53

I think it's lovely.

There are lots of places where "star" is a common girl's name in the language, I think - Stella in Italy, Tara in India, and so on. I think they're all beautiful.

NailsNeedDoing · 25/10/2021 16:56

I’m not at all familiar with Welsh names, but I wouldn’t have read it as being pronounced with ‘un’ at the end, I think it’s clear it’s supposed to be ‘en’. It’s lovely, I really like it.

LoathesomeLinsey · 25/10/2021 16:59

I'm Irish and it comes out like seh-rin in my accent...

It used to get a lot of love on MN, but I always hear it as Sarah with an n except when it's said in a Welsh accent.

I don't think it would sound nice in certain English accents. I think it's lovely in a Welsh accent though.

IWantToBeNynaeve · 25/10/2021 17:03

Gorgeous name. I'm in Ireland and I've only ever known one Seren, its lovely.

daisypond · 25/10/2021 17:07

But in Italy, it would be very unusual to be named Stella. It is not really a name there. It’s the same as being named Star in the UK - just a bit odd.
Elisemum · 25/10/2021 17:11

I think it’s nice; never heard it before but I like it.
But it does bring Serena to mind- which obviously is a girls name.

Until I read this, I assumed seren was a girls name?

I don't know the Welsh pronunciation, I would say it as Sair - en (that is the nearest i can write it!

As a girl's name very pretty, as a boys name, no I probably wouldn't use it. (but I am not Welsh)

SlamLikeAGuitar · 25/10/2021 17:22

A friend of mine has a Dd called Seren - I think it’s beautiful. And not very common in my area either - she’s definitely the only one at our DC’s school

LostArcher · 25/10/2021 17:26

I know a Seren. Beautiful name and fine for a teenager in SE UK. I don't understand why it would date.

Dinosauraddict · 25/10/2021 17:26

We are in SE England and know one Seren (pronounced Seh-ren). He's a boy. I eventually had to text his parents and ask his name as after 3 subtle attempts of trying to work out what they were saying I was still none the wiser. I'm used to it now but it definitely feels 'out there' (I wouldn't call a child Star either personally).

DramaAlpaca · 25/10/2021 17:28

It's not that uncommon in England. It won't be pronounced the Welsh way though, it'll be said as if it rhymes with seven.

minatrina · 25/10/2021 17:45

I know two girls named Seren in England, and I always hear them and others around them pronounce it with the "en" sound rather than an "un" sound at the end.

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 25/10/2021 17:45

Really, @daisypond? I know two Italians called Stella, and it's well within their top 100? Maybe it's a recent thing, but definitely popular at the moment.

lemonsyellow · 25/10/2021 17:47

It’s quite common these days - gets mentioned on here a lot - though I don’t actually know any. Good name for a pet. It’ll be pronounced wrongly at the end to rhyme with Karen or Darren. Would you call your child Star? If not, why not? The same applies to Seren.

mamaoffourdc · 25/10/2021 17:48

Seren is beautiful for a girl x

Oh, I’ll stand corrected, then. I lived in Italy for many years, but my knowledge of Italian baby name trends might be well out of date!
toastofthetown · 25/10/2021 17:56

I don’t really like the name, though it is popular in Wales. In England alone it’s ranked #255. So not common, but not unusual either. For context across England and Wales the name ranked at #255 was Elise.
