What are people’s thoughts on Seren?
My DH is Welsh, but we live in England.

OP posts:

I love it. Can’t convince DH sadly but I think it’s beautiful and don’t see why it would date particularly.

pompomsgalore · 25/10/2021 20:31
@pompomsgalore - yeah, my name is pronounced wrongly more often than not and my Mam, all her family and my DH and his family cringe for me.

I used to hate parents evening as my Mam kept correcting my teachers when they got it wrong Grin

I always like meeting Welsh people at work - bonded with a Hefin, an Angharad, a Sian and a Geraint over the dodgy ways people mangled our names!

It doesn't bother me when people mispronounce it though, it's always been my norm so no idea what it's like to have a name everyone says properly! Hopefully it doesn't bother your Betsan either (beautiful name btw).
I tell everyone I suspect will mispronounce it that she's Betsi now.

Thanks for the reassurances!

I'm a fluent Welsh speaker and I think it's tacky.

Not a classic or traditional name where I'm from.

But it is very, very popular these days.

drigon · 25/10/2021 20:37

It's lovely.

daisypond · 25/10/2021 20:43

I agree with pp above who said it was tacky.

whispamint · 25/10/2021 20:48

Yes know of a few (London), i like it.

whispamint · 25/10/2021 20:49

And it won’t be pronounced correctly.

Why not?

OctopusFTM · 25/10/2021 21:40

@Feelingofftoday is Anwen viewed as tacky?

I would say not, but I don't speak for all Welsh people!

LoathesomeLinsey · 25/10/2021 21:45

Not Welsh, (Irish), but Anwen is so much nicer imo.

OctopusFTM · 25/10/2021 21:47

@Feelingofftoday haha. Thanks. I just thought you’d be able to say if it had the same vibe as Seren for you

Definitely not!

Anwen is very sweet imho

liveforsummer · 25/10/2021 21:52

What a ridiculous statement?? Most names have another meaning in another country. I’m not in my native country and in this country my children’s names translate to Christmas, field and pure.

@Winniemarysarah my DD's name means sorrow. If we paid attention to that then I'm sure star would be preferable 😆.

OP Seren is lovely IMO. I know one who is 8. I'm not in wales.

Lalliella · 26/10/2021 01:06

Too much like Sarin.

KirstenBlest · 26/10/2021 09:49

Anwen isn't tacky but is a bit grannyish if you speak Welsh.

KirstenBlest · 26/10/2021 10:31

Anwen is a lot nicer than Seren

liveforsummer · 26/10/2021 10:36

@Lalliella

Too much like Sarin.
What's wrong with Sarin. I've never heard of it so I'm not sure being 'too like it' is an issue. Lots of names are similar to others
Twizbe · 26/10/2021 10:40

I like it. But I adore welsh names. I was born in Swansea and over half my possible baby name options were welsh.

My daughter has a welsh name (Cerys) and we're in England. It amazes me how many people can't pronounce it though.

It's said just how it's written but sooooooooo many people say Seris or mumble it until I tell them. I never predicted that one.

Still it's a gorgeous name and suits her and I love it so meh.

Kayo123456 · 26/10/2021 10:57

It’s used in Turkey too as a girls name.

daisypond · 26/10/2021 11:30

Sarin is the poison used in the famous terrorist incident where 5,500 people were injured, 1,000 people were blinded temporarily and 13 people died. It was let loose in the tube network in Japan.

Winniemarysarah · 26/10/2021 12:11

@liveforsummer it’s the name of a gas used in chemical warfare

Kentuckycarby · 26/10/2021 14:57

Lots of names are similar to others
Yeah but being similar to the name of a dangerous chemical isn’t ideal

Darceyhemingway · 27/10/2021 16:52

I'm Welsh living in England and am planning on calling our baby mabli if she's a girl. Seren is similar vibe/ easy to pronounce so It's fine!x

Love Mabli. Beware some people add a syllable and say Maberli. It's only a handful so don't let it put you off.

Why not - how often is the name of a specific chemical warfare gas used in day to day life?
