Hello mumnetters,
I would like to know your thoughts on Matthew?
We both like it and think it will age well . It doesn't seem very popular at the moment where we live. Also any suggestions for middle names.
Thank you in advance.

Love it, know a fab 10 yr old one. We don’t have a single one in my DC 200 pupil primary.

ofwarren · 14/10/2021 15:36

Great name!
How many syllables is your surname and what letter does it begin with?

Peridot1 · 14/10/2021 15:39

Love it although am biased. Mine is now 20.

He’s now Matt to his friends which doesn’t bother me but may you so be warned.

Thiswayupanddown · 14/10/2021 15:42

@ofwarren , our surname begins with C and has 2 syllables.

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 14/10/2021 15:43

My 14yo nephews name. It's lovely and he's awesome!

BeKindBeYou · 14/10/2021 15:44

Love it!

I think one syllable names work well with Matthew

Matthew James

Matthew John

Matthew Jack

Matthew Paul

In England and Wales Matthew has been declining in popularity and will probably fall out of the top hundred in the 2020 data. It’s a bit dated from about thirty years ago, but it will age well, and he probably won’t share a class with another one. Personally I think it’s a bit dull, but it’s a solid name.

I think most middle names would work with Matthew. I’d be tempted to go for something a bit more out there but I appreciate maybe a bit polarising.
Matthew Aloysius
Matthew Casimir
Matthew Jago
Matthew Lysander
Matthew Octavian

I'm biased as I've got one. Love it, DS has had a couple of nicknames over the years (Matty, Matt), he went to primary school with no other Matthews in his year, then on to secondary where there was loads! Now at college and his best mate is also a Matt..

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/10/2021 16:02

It's a fantastic name. One of my favourites.

Ihaveoflate · 14/10/2021 16:07

I'm married to one who has managed to get to middle age without ever shortening it to Matt, so it's not inevitable.

I like it, but I'm definitely biased.

Why spoil a great name like Matthew with a list of possibly the most ridiculous middle names ever!!!
LavenderYellow · 14/10/2021 16:19

I can't see Matthew ever going out of 'fashion'. Its a timeless name.
I'd go with similar timeless middle names like Thomas/James/William etc.

lollipoprainbow · 14/10/2021 16:24

My nephews name he's 33 and awesome !!

toastofthetown · 14/10/2021 16:34

@myheartskippedabeat All those names are names I like, taken from my name list. I don’t think they are ridiculous. The OP asked for middle name suggestions so I thought she might want something with a bit more imagination than the standard middle names.

YouHaveNoAuthorityHereJackie · 14/10/2021 16:35

Love it, my teen is called Matthew and has never had it shortened. It suits him. I’ve never met a Matthew who was anything other than a kind, decent person which influenced my decision.

Chakraleaf · 14/10/2021 16:36

I have a 18yr old Matthew. Love it

emmathedilemma · 14/10/2021 16:52

Great name, i know a couple of young ones (tweens and teens) and it's always suited them.

KirstenBlest · 14/10/2021 16:52

I like it and Matt.
Some will say it as Maffew though.

Lmes · 14/10/2021 16:58

I have a Matthew aged 19, he was the only Matthew in his class all through school. His middle name is Dylan and we have a Mc surname. I love the name so much . It suits him .

jollyhollyday · 14/10/2021 17:05

I also have a teen Matthew - didn't share his name in primary school but maybe there is only one other in his secondary. Lovely solid name and his hasn't been shortened either.
I agree it sits well with short middle names and mine son's has been mentioned already. Not one of those crazy names mentioned though Wink

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 14/10/2021 17:06

Love it. Love Matt as well.

What are these middle names. They're all weird! I don't agree with it being outdated and why would you want half the class with the same name anyway?
Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 14/10/2021 17:10

Sorry @toastofthetown I did read your post wrong there.

3peassuit · 14/10/2021 17:11

It’s a timeless classic. Love it.
