Just For Fun - The Larkins

35andThriving · 11/10/2021 23:11

Thought I would post this thread just for a bit of lighthearted fun.

After watching the first episode of The Larkins, the remake of The Darling Buds of May, I have been thinking about their names.

I just wondered which name you would choose from the family names, if you had to use one?

The names are: -

Florence (Ma Larkins' name)
Sidney (Pa)
Marriette
Montgomery
Primrose
Zinnia
Petunia
Victoria

Also, just for fun, what name would you pick for an additional sibling?

I think I would choose Victoria or Zinnia, and am still mulling over additional sibling names. Smile

I think Petunia is nice, but wasn't it Harry Potter's stepmother's name? That would put me off it. Florence is lovely, quite popular again. Another sibling would be called, maybe Cuthbert?

DramaAlpaca · 11/10/2021 23:32

Florence or Victoria. The rest are dreadful.

KirstenBlest · 12/10/2021 09:17

Mariette is pretty but too Marie-Antoinette

Victoria is nice. Not keen on the others

Never read novels or seen new series, but I remember in the original series that Mariette was in fact named after Marie-Antoinette because, Ma explained, it was so dreadful chopping a Queen's head off. As you do.

Most of them are lovely names. One is my daughter's and another a dog we lost last year.

Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep · 12/10/2021 12:21

I actually had one of them on the list for DD except it has the same 2 first letters as our surname and the result was just too too 1950s jolly hockey sticks girls' adventure novel. Shame as it's a pretty name and would have suited her down to the ground for multiple reasons, but luckily the name she has is also very suitable!

KirstenBlest · 12/10/2021 12:21

@TataMamma, yes Smile

35andThriving · 12/10/2021 12:55

I like the names. Personally, I reckon Christmas-born twins called Holly and Ivy could fit right in! Smile

I like Zinnia best. Another girl could be called Sylvia and a boy Algenon.

CiaoForDiNiaoSaur · 12/10/2021 22:50

I like Florence and Primrose best.

I think a sibling would be Bartholomew. Or Englebert.

Petunia is Harry Potters cruel Auntie (although she's not all bad)
Zinnia was Matildas nasty Mum. ( I think)

MirandaBlu · 13/10/2021 10:59

I think that Petunia and Primrose will be widely associated with Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, at least currently in the UK.

I'd choose Victoria for a child, or Florence. I have a great uncle Sidney so it feels a bit old fashioned to me, but I like Sydney for a girl.

Possible sibling names: Beauregard, Jolyon, Forsythia, Lavender, Amethyst.

VanillaAndOrange · 13/10/2021 19:26

Was there another boy in the original series? I can't remember his name, but I have a vague impression of a fully grown young man and an early-teenage boy.

I like Victoria and Florence and I think I kind of like Zinnia too.

Ma Larkin does have another baby. She isn't pregnant with him yet... The youngest in the family ends up being called Oscar.

Great thread, OP. Smile My favourites are Sidney, Mariette and Primrose.

I don't know if it's the same in the books, but in the 1990s TV series, according to wikipedia, Primrose had five middle names: Violet Anemone Iris Magnolia Narcissa. The twins Zinnia and Petunia both shared the same three middle names: June Florence Nightingale. Grin

And spoilers:
.
.
Oscar's middle names are Columbus Septimus Dupont.
.
Another spoiler:
.
.
Mariette's son's name is John Blenheim.

35andThriving · 13/10/2021 21:06

IVflytrap, glad you like the thread. Smile

I didn't know that about all the middle names. Ma and Pa Larkin really went to town with all their baby names! Smile

In the books, Victoria's middle names are Adelaide Ann Cleopatra, and in the last book there's another sister called Phyllida Cleopatra Boadicea Nightingale (love the books, never seen the TV adaptation)

35andThriving · 14/10/2021 09:52

That's interesting to know, vampirethriller. I had no idea about the other sister.

Well Victoria is DD2's middle name so I'd choose that. She was going to be named Victoria, but XH and his family immediately started calling her (before she was even born, things like Vic and Vicky, hate shortened names so named her something else.

Think I might call a sibling Jane, because I adore that name, so pretty

35andThriving · 16/10/2021 11:43

I love Victoria in its full form too, zukiecat. It's gorgeous.

My daughter's name is Mariette. I first watched the Darling Buds when I was 10 and I told people if I have a girl she'll be called Mariette. Although she's Mariette Jane in the TV show because my Jayne is spelt different, my daughter became Mariette Soleil. She starts high school this year.
