We’re thinking of Oisín for baby boy due early next year! DH loves the name and it’s growing on me.

What other names do you think of when hearing Oisín?

What do you personally think of the name?

What nicknames?

Lastly, we live in Ireland and bub will have Irish and French passport. Is using a fada going to be too complicated? I’m thinking admin and French people.

I think Naoise, Fiachra, Lughaidh, Fionn.
Bit mythological - would hope he dresses in flowing cloak and with lovely long hair!
The spelling is a bit like French oiseau isn't it?
The Old Irish spellings include Ossín, but in Ireland people would think you can't spell if you used that.

A friend years ago used to baby sit a French/irish boy called oisín , don't think the French side of the family ever had any issues and most irish people will have no issues either. Mumsnet is a bad place to ask for opinions on irish names. They usually hate on them quite badly

Oisín is one of my favourite names.

At least the French are familiar with accents, I think you’d have more of a problem with the British.

I love this name so much, but was sadly vetoed lol. Definitely wouldn’t drop the fada. I’ve heard of one Oisín getting called Osh, but just as a nickname from parents rather than day to day. I think Odhrán has a similar feel.

I’m really not keen on it but I have no connection with Ireland at all. I have lived in France and speak French so for me I just see “wazan” in my head.
I do love the girls name Roisín though. Not sure if that has a fada or if I did it correctly.

It has two fadas - Róisín.

DD has a friend called Oisin. He doesn't use the accent/fada on his name. Has caused a bit of confusion but people are more familiar with Roisin so he usually says "like Roisin without the R". So in my accent, more like Awww-sheen.

Makes me think of the producer who was twatted by Clarkson and got a pretty hefty settlement. I like it.

I love it but we have a Róisín so wouldn’t have been able to use it keep the fadas. Most people are smart enough to pick up the pronunciation without making a big deal of it.

Róisín has a fada on the o, Oisín doesn't, and ó and o are pronounced differently in Irish.

The OP is in Ireland so shouldn't have problems with Oisín. It's a popular name here.

I would imagine that everyone who lives in Ireland where the OP lives will know how to pronounce an Irish name.

It's a really popular and well known name in Ireland. Lovely.

OP even if you had the most basic of names you're still going to have to confirm the pronunciation somewhere and for someone! Go for it.
