Thoughts on using pet's name?

One of our pets (who lives with my parents) has a name which DH and I have always loved - it's a human name, not one overtly for a pet. Thoughts on using the same name for our son?

Use it, the pet won’t be around forever and people will forget.

pinkyredrose · 06/10/2021 12:08

If you want to use it then use it! What's the name?

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/10/2021 12:09

What is the pet? Unless it’s a parrot or a tortoise, it won’t be an issue by the time your child is old enough to be bothered (probably won’t be anyway).

WeepySheepy · 06/10/2021 12:10

Is the pet quite old?

WeepySheepy · 06/10/2021 12:11

And will the parents with the pet keep going on about how the child was named after their dog/cat/whatever and if so will that annoy you?

janefitzjane · 06/10/2021 12:11

Wouldn't hurt to ask around some more to see if it's odd, but as far as I think go for it! What is the name?

tickledtiger · 06/10/2021 12:12

Use it I say.

EmJo1 · 06/10/2021 12:15

Pet is a dog and he's 5 years old. Rather not disclose the name, but it's a classic name

My son is named after mine and my partners childhood dogs, they had the same name and both passed away many years before we even met, very common name given to many children and many dogs. Also nearly named our daughter after my parents dog.

WeepySheepy · 06/10/2021 12:57

Sam is fine. Rover is not.

Hoppinggreen · 06/10/2021 12:58

DS is named after my first dog

SugarPlum10 · 06/10/2021 15:33

I think if it’s something like Teddy then I’d say it’s fine.

MintyGreenDream · 06/10/2021 16:21

Is it Rover?

EmJo1 · 06/10/2021 20:50

No, not Rover!
We don't see it as "naming him after" our dog per se, it's more that we love the name and it works well with our other son's name

My granddaughter was given our dear old cat’s name as a second name. It’s a proper Christian name and she’s quite ok with that.

Biscuits1 · 08/10/2021 20:58

Why is everybody talking in riddles and not disclosing the names if they aren't obscure?

This^^

I think people should be banned from the baby name boards if they’re not prepared to say the actual name in question. Come on OP… it’s only fair Grin

wetotter · 08/10/2021 22:23

No one would blink if you were naming your DC for an ancestor.

And dogs are nicer than a heck of a lot of people.

Do it!

(As long as it's not Fido)

pinkyredrose · 08/10/2021 22:29

As long as it's not Fido i actually know someone called Fido.

millzcrawf · 08/10/2021 22:46

My nans dog is called George and I've always loved the name, but I don't think I'd use it now because George is 16 and still with us 🙈

headintheproverbial · 08/10/2021 23:59

DH is named after a dead dog.

sarah13xx · 09/10/2021 00:29

I wondered about this too when I was pregnant. Went with a different name in the end up but still think about my dog and how much I love his name every day. I would have used it as a middle name if he had died longer than a couple of years ago but I felt like people would almost laugh at the fact I’d used my dogs name as my child’s middle name 😕

How sad that people are writing this poor soul off as dead when he’s very much alive 😭 I know a girl who’s brother used what she considered ‘her’ baby name. She then got pregnant a couple of months behind her brother and his wife and she’s using the same name for her little girl! The grandparents will have two grandchildren of the exact same name! If they can pull that off you can 100% use a pets name jeez
