Eleanor or Meredith

Hi, if any of my friends / family spot this, please don't share it or make fun of me 🙈

We have a little boy Kit (Christopher) and recently welcomed his baby sister.

We're settled on either Meredith (Merrie) or Eleanor (Nell), but which should we choose?

I do wonder if Eleanor / Nell goes better with Kit, or whether this is my by now fevered / panicked imagination at work. I maybe prefer Eleanor slightly for its sound (all other considerations aside)?? However, I do worry Eleanor and it's derivates are a bit overused - in particular I've noticed it a lot among female acquaintances of my age. Is it a bit square? Will it feel middle aged when she is a young woman? We're particularly not keen on Ellie (don't hate it just find it boring I suppose) and aware you can't always choose the nickname you want.

Meredith by contrast seems very unique (I've never met one) and not dated at all. Is Merrie too twee? I like that it's relatively unisex. Does it "go" with Kit?

We have to name this baby in 2 days(!!!) when she is registered. Got a middle name already for either and they both go nicely with our surname. They're both good names! Help!

Please no new name suggestions, I couldn't handle any more possibilities 😅

They were the last two names on my list! I went with Meredith. She gets Merry a lot.

EmmaC78 · 05/10/2021 21:58

I prefer Eleanor, not really keen on Meredith at all.

Footle · 05/10/2021 21:58

Kit and Nell, Old Curiosity Shop.

TatianaBis · 05/10/2021 22:07

Can't stand Eleanor but love Nell and it goes much better with Kit.

I think Meredith is dated and provincial unless you're actually Welsh - except it turns out that Meredith is actually a male name - Maredudd.
Merri is really twee.

StevieNix · 05/10/2021 22:08

I LOVE the name Meredith but prefer the nickname Edie to meri.
Kit and Edie sound gorgeous together too!

Sleepinghyena · 05/10/2021 22:14

Meredith is horrible. It's has an ugly sound and look.

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 05/10/2021 22:19

I love them both. Meredith is the name of one of my angels, and if I ever had another daughter Eleanor would be her name. (Not that ill be having any more ever)

Mischance · 05/10/2021 22:20

Meredith is a very common surname round here and calling a child this would be like giving a child the first name Smith or Jones; so Eleanor sounds better to me.

WeasilyPleased · 05/10/2021 22:51

I'm sorry to offend anyone but I really dislike the name Eleanor. It sounds so frumpy and clumpy to me and Ellies are everywhere.
Love Meredith so that gets my vote.

hels71 · 07/10/2021 21:02

I have an Eleanor who is never known as Ellie. She is 14 and loves her name

AuntDympna · 08/10/2021 12:54

Nell.

daisypond · 08/10/2021 14:23

Eleanor. I don’t like Meredith at all. They’re names that on opposite sides of the spectrum to me, so I’m surprised both would be in your list. I wouldn’t shorten to Ellie, though. Nell is better, or Nora at a push.

Cas112 · 08/10/2021 15:22

Meredith!

Foreverbaffled · 08/10/2021 15:29

I'm an Eleanor! Love my name. Have never been called Ellie. Always Eleanor. People can never spell it but that doesn't matter really.

eleanoreleanoreleanor · 08/10/2021 16:10

Eleanor is a great name Grin

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 08/10/2021 16:23

I don't really like either. Find them a bit dowdy.

But Nell is lovely and works as a standalone name. Merrie would just be misheard as Mary.

peaceinourtime · 12/10/2021 18:43

Meredith is nice. I also knew a Merridy, I'm not sure if it was short for Meredith but its nice in its own right.

Tatum1234 · 12/10/2021 18:55

Meredith is much nicer, Eleanor is very overused and a bit boring.

Phyllis321 · 12/10/2021 18:57

I prefer Meredith. I know one nn Ditty.

Meredithishername · 12/10/2021 19:31

I’m biased! My (young adult) daughter is a Meredith. We always assumed we’d shorten it to Meri but it just never happened. Grey’s Anatomy fans often call her Mer. She prefers the full version.

Veralil · 12/10/2021 19:41

Meredith. It is a beautiful name and I have never met anyone called that either. I had a lovely aunt called Eleanor but still love the name Meredith. I wanted to call my daughter Posy Meredith (many moons ago) but DH vetoed it at the time due to having an unusual name himself!

Edenember · 13/10/2021 10:51

Eleanor. I’d maybe spell Eleanore to get the pronunciation you want. Nell and Norah both lovely diminutives.
