Three boys name

ClaraBean · 01/10/2021 21:34

Not exactly urgent as we don't know if we're having a boy or a girl but it feels like we have gone through every boys name on the planet and we are left with three that we both like.
Opinions on these three please!!
They are the only three we agree on so don't be too harsh 😁
Eugene
Seymour
Desmond

Do you like the shorthand versions of them like Gene, Des? Seymour is nice but important your surname works with it and isn't a noun like "See more xx" if that makes sense!

Happenchance · 01/10/2021 21:50

I prefer Desmond. Seymour makes me think of Seymour Butts.

peaceinourtime · 01/10/2021 21:54

A vote for Eugene, important that you are prepared for shortings/like them as Eugene will probably most likely be shorted to Gene. The shorting of Gene is quiet nice.
I'm not familiar with Seymour being a mainstream last name/first name. Desmond sounds a bit old. I can't really imagine a baby Desmond/Des. All the Desmond/Des' I have known have been 50 plus. Its like naming a baby Howard. I can't really imagine a baby Howard either.

timoteigirl · 01/10/2021 21:58

Desmond immediately makes me think of Desmond Tutu. All three names are quite different style. So lots depends how it goes with your family name.

Rainbowqueeen · 01/10/2021 22:00

I think they are all nice
Like PP I’d base a decision on nicknames, how they go with your surname and which one baby suits best.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 02/10/2021 00:26

None are really my taste - I find Eugene and Seymour a bit nerdy sounding, sorry (probably influenced by US film and TV characters as they are reasonably uncommon names in the UK I think). Desmond I find slightly old-fashioned but would be my pick of the 3 - although I much prefer the nn "Denny" to dated "Des".

Kite22 · 02/10/2021 00:32

Erm.....

I guess Desmond is the least bad ......

DramaAlpaca · 02/10/2021 00:34

I'm really sorry, but I can't say I like any of those at all.

However, what I will say is that of all of them, Eugene somehow has a bit of a cool vibe.

Balonzette · 02/10/2021 06:01

Eugene is okay... I don't like the other two at all.

Balonzette · 02/10/2021 06:02

Can you imagine a baby Des 😬

CobraChicken · 02/10/2021 06:08

None are ones that I would have chosen, but I do know a really nice Eugene (pensioner, not child) and Gene is not a bad nickname, so on that basis, that would be the one I'd choose out of the three names.

BigBumBessie · 02/10/2021 06:12

I like all of them but especially Desmond.
My DS has an "old man's" name and it really suits him

Temple29 · 02/10/2021 06:18

I actually like Seymour best since it’s unusual. Next to that I’d pick Eugene. Honestly go with whatever you like best. If you picked a name in the top 10 everyone would tell you it’s too common.

17caterpillars1mouse · 02/10/2021 07:45

Eugene - I actually really like Eugene, though I have watched tangled a lot recently lol but it is a nice, unusual but well know name. Yes I like it and Gene is pretty cool

Seymour - Seymour butt's comes to mind from many years watching the Simpson as a kid. Not one I love

Desmond - nice, handsome. I like it a lot but slightly prefer Eugene

Blubells · 02/10/2021 08:03

They're all three good solid names that are well known, easy to pronounce and not overused.

I prefer Desmond. But they're all good.

ClaraBean · 02/10/2021 09:19

Actually I do love the suggestion of Den/Denny as a nn for Desmond. My grandpa was a Denny (to his wife) so my mum will think o named the baby after he dad which will please her!
Hadn't thought of Seymour Butts. Very surprised DP didn't think of it 😁 I think of Seymour from Little Shop of Horrors who is wonderful 😁

@peaceinourtime actually I rather like Howard!! I'm gonna see if I can get it past DP 😁

bekindbekindbekind · 02/10/2021 19:25

Oh I love these choices OP! Brilliant names. Personally I'd prefer Eugene or Seymour over Desmond as Desmond just sounds like Desmond Tutu to me and overall a bit more stale perhaps than the other two which are so refreshing and interesting.

mathanxiety · 02/10/2021 23:38

How about Denis if you like Den or Denny?

Suggestions:
Stanley
Richard
Douglas
Clement
Roy
Arnold
Malcolm
Conrad

From your list I really only like Eugene. Gene has a cool rock vibe. However, there is also Bob's Burgers...

Seymour (YY to 'Butts') and Desmond are not to my taste. There are a gazillion Desmonds in care homes all over Ireland.
