How would you pronounce Arran?

ArranMumma · 28/09/2021 14:44

We are calling our baby Arran as my partner is Scottish and there is a beautiful place there called the Isle of Arran which we have visited together. I am English so I don’t really know but apparently the name is fairly popular in Scotland. We pronounce it the same way I would pronounce Aaron (“Arren”) - is that how you read it too?

Yes, arren / maybe more ah-run. Same as how you say the place, so there shouldn't be any confusion. (am English, and would think most people in the UK would have heard of the Isle of Arran)

silverbubbles · 28/09/2021 14:49

I would say Arren

DramaAlpaca · 28/09/2021 14:50

Yes, l'd pronounce Arran the way you would, OP.

I'd instinctively pronounce Aaron as AIR-on though, the traditional biblical way.

ILoveShula · 28/09/2021 14:51

Rhymes with Darren, Karen and Sharon

SylvanasWindrunner · 28/09/2021 14:51

Yes, just said like Arr-en. I don't think anyone would be confused about the pronunciation, but never underestimate people I suppose Grin

Elieza · 28/09/2021 14:57

Ah-ren.
I’m Scottish and live on the mainland reasonably near there.

MirandaBlu · 28/09/2021 16:40

I have a cousin called Arran. Both parents from the west coast of Scotland, child born and raised there. If your husband is Scottish, I'd go with the way he pronounces the place name "Arran" as your guide. To me, there are differences among Arran, Aaron, and Aran (the Irish island), but they are subtle and can be influenced by local accents.

To me, the name is AHR-ah'n, with a kind of broad initial "a" and a clipped second syllable. Outside of Scotland, I hear it pronounced like AR-inn and AR-en, or even AER-inn or AER-'n, and those are not quite right.

mewkins · 28/09/2021 16:43

Ah-ren... always reminds me of a joke about him being a heavy sweater Grin

emmathedilemma · 28/09/2021 16:50

A-ran not Air-on

SoupDragon · 28/09/2021 16:53

I'd pronounce it Arren

(but I'd pronounce Aaron "Air-un" which is a whole other debate on MN!)

Aaron is pronounced air-on Confused

Arran is pronounced Ahr ran
It's a pretty well known place. I doubt he'll have much difficulty

Er no it isn't? My friend is Aaron and it is the same pronunciation as Arran.

Anyway OP, I'm from Glasgow and pronounce it 'Ahr-in'

ShuddaBeenMe · 01/10/2021 22:36

Aaron is Ah Ron

I would say yours like Ah Ran

Frogsandsheep · 01/10/2021 22:40

Aaron can be pronounced
ah-run or air-on.

When I was a teacher I heard both. I don’t think either is wrong.

Frogsandsheep · 01/10/2021 22:41

The biblical pronunciation is Air-on and I’ve also heard that twice in real life.
Ah-run is a much more popular pronunciation I think.

Heruka · 01/10/2021 22:42

Agree, Arran is pronounced like the island, which I agree is beautiful and will be lovely to take your boy there in future!! Ime Arron spelling more typical, or Aaron. Aaron is air-on.

Frogsandsheep · 01/10/2021 22:42

To answer the OP I’d say
Ah-ran

bringbackfonzi · 01/10/2021 22:43

I've only ever heard Aaron pronounced Air-ron.
Arran I would pronounce as you suggest OP.

Heruka · 01/10/2021 22:44

Hmm, having seen these last posts, I’d say in Scotland that the sound of Arran the isle sounds more like arr-in than arr-un.

Frogsandsheep · 01/10/2021 22:45

@bringbackfonzi @Heruka

It’s pretty varied in it’s pronunciation.

I taught a lot more ah-runs than air-ons but all spelled Aaron.

UmpteenthTime · 01/10/2021 22:50

Pronounce it as your husband does.
You’re right, it is a beautiful place to be named after and I hope you have many happy family holidays there.

MiddlesexGirl · 01/10/2021 22:52

This.
BubbleCoffee · 02/10/2021 01:33

Aaron - Air-on
Arran - Arun

mathanxiety · 02/10/2021 05:01

Yes, Arr-un/Arr-in/Arr-en for Arran.

But Aaron is pronounced with an AIR sound. I've never heard it pronounced any other way.

EdgeOfACoin · 02/10/2021 05:47

The traditional pronunciation of Aaron is air-ron.
