djtunes99 · 26/09/2021 19:59

DH and i have both chosen Aylah for one of our top 5 names for DD but not sure whether to pronounce it as A-lah or Eye-lah. DD is due in November so got a bit of time to choose and would love for your opinion,
Thanks.

I would pronounce this Ay-lah. If I heard Eye-lah I’d assume it was Isla.

RandomMess · 26/09/2021 20:27

I'd assume Eye-lah as have a friend Ayesha with Scottish roots pronounced Eye-sha

Abraxan · 26/09/2021 20:28

I'd pronounce it a ay-lah (last part more l-uh I guess, like in Isla)

I'd not say eye-lah (Isla) automatically due to the /ay/ spelling being there.

I teach a number of Asian girls with names beginning with Ay and they are all pronounced with the /ai/ /ay/ sound.

If you want Eye-la then spell it Isla.

coffeepleeease · 26/09/2021 20:30

There's a little girl in DD's class called Ayla, pronounced Isla!

BananaPB · 26/09/2021 20:30

I'd assume ay-lah (Layla without the L, ay rhyming with day)

SW1amp · 26/09/2021 20:31

@Wassailer

Ayla is the female lead character in the earth’s children series. Not made up at all, some people are just bloody snobs about names and haven’t actually read any books. I’d pronounce is Ai-lah.
The name was made up by the author of the series Confused And it’s still a different name to the one OP is suggesting Confused

@eddiemairswife

Why do people choose names they don't know how to pronounce?
This! Hmm
MrsTerryPratchett · 26/09/2021 20:34

The name was made up by the author of the series

Really? Because it's literally a name in a couple of cultures. Is this like when white people 'discover' populated areas?

NigellaSeed · 26/09/2021 20:34

Aye-lah

Blueroses99 · 26/09/2021 20:35

I have a Turkish friend with an Ayla, pronounced exactly the same as Isla. It’s not a made up name or spelling.

Pronouncing it as A-la could be problematic as it’ll sound like Allah. Those saying Ai-lah or Ay-lah - both sound the same as Eye-lah / Isla to me!

Buttons294749 · 26/09/2021 20:38

The Turkish Ayla is eye-la. It is s proper name and not "made up"

Changenameforthis43 · 26/09/2021 20:40

I have an Ayla pronounced Ay-la. A lot of people think its pronounced Isla. She's 4 now and the health visitor still calls her Isla I haven't bothered to correct her Grin.

Why do people choose names they don't know how to pronounce?
So that they can whinge on here when everyone else from Grandparents to Nursery staff get it wrong for the next 5 years.
Changenameforthis43 · 26/09/2021 20:42

And yes a lot of people can't spell it I've seen it spelt as Alya or Allah even when replying to a message where I've actually wrote her name.

Wtf86 · 26/09/2021 20:43

I know an ayla what Ailah or Isla? Depending on how you want it pronounced?

Changenameforthis43 · 26/09/2021 20:45

Although I wouldn't worry about other people spelling it differently I have a normal name that can be spelt 2 ways and people constantly spell it the other way or a made up way. Doesn't matter what name you give someone will always come with another spelling even when the name is in front of them.

It's weird isn't it?!

OP has probably heard Isla and doesn't know how to spell it.

TwinsandTrifle · 26/09/2021 20:53

If all the people saying Ay-lah, mean the "Ay" rhymes with Hay, and the "lah" is like La Perla, then I too pronounce it Ay-lah. Aylah the wailer.

It's terrible, and in no way would ever be pronounced Eye-lah, because, well, that's Isla.

What is it with the names at the moment. Pick one you know how to pronounce at least?!

QuickieNCforthis · 26/09/2021 20:54

Muslim background. We pronounce it roughly the same as Isla. To me it's an Arabic name. Eye-la.

careerchangeperhaps · 26/09/2021 20:57

I know an Ayla and it's pronounced the same as Isla (eye-lah). I'd pronounce Aylah the same TBH (but you will still have some people assuming it's A-Lah).

OuiOuiBonjour · 26/09/2021 21:01

I've only ever heard it like Isla. It's a well known name amongst Turkish and Arabic people. Like Aisha which is eye-sha.

felulageller · 26/09/2021 21:05

Just spell it correctly or she'll grow up with everyone thinking her parents can't spell!!

SeanChailleach · 26/09/2021 21:44

Here's how to spell the name in a few writing systems:

Ayla is a name for Girls
The meaning of Ayla is halo of the moon and figuratively it means beautiful, brilliant.

Ayla In Arabic : أيلة
Ayla In Urdu : یلا
Ayla In Hindi : अयला
Ayla In Bangla : আয়লা

SeanChailleach · 26/09/2021 21:49

Ayla in Persian:
آیلا
I think that's most of them.
