If I like Theo, what else will I like?

So far this is the only name we can agree on but I don't love it like I love our daughters' names. Boys names are really hard!!

Fwiw I like Jacob, Joshua, Oliver, dh has said no but hasn't offered alternatives.

Popularity doesn't bother me at all.

Thanks all. For context, I'm a primary school teacher and therefore link most names to kids I've taught over the years!

My daughters' names are "pretty" and despite being names that I also know adults to have they are sweet on babies. I want a sweet boy name too. I really like Charlie but can't have it as it's already in the family but I like the -ie ending. Next to that but a lot less so, I like albie for the same reason but dh has said no.

Others I've considered but vetoed -
Alfie - hate Alf
Archie - Dh said no
Henry - hen - just no
Jamie - dh for same reason doesn't like J names which bugs me as I like Jacob, josh etc
Ollie - dh says Oliver just reminds him of "please sir can I have some more" - stupid reason.
Finley - know loads
Freddie - don't like Fred
Frankie - don't like frank

Really don't like Seth - rhymes with death - just why?!

Also like but know loads of friends / cousins etc with max, Zach, Leo

Sooooo all I have is Theo. I like Theo. I don't love Theo. It doesn't even fit my sweet little boy wish.

Sorry! I put two names on my list that you don’t like. 🤭

Otis and Rex would be my two narrowed down alternatives.

I have a Theo who is 19 now!
I also have an Alec.

My Theo is almost 18, so I love it! We also have 2 other boys whose names begin with R and which have appeared several times on these posts....

Our fourth didn't have a name for several days. The one we'd chosen beforehand didn't suit him....perhaps wait and decide after the birth?

IWantT0BreakFree · 26/09/2021 08:25

I hear you OP. I could name 20 girls but boys are difficult! I work in a school too and agree it does make it harder when so many names remind you of particular children. Unlike you, I also really am bothered about popularity which makes it even harder. My name was ridiculously popular in the decade I was born and all through school, college, uni, at work etc, whenever I’m among peers of the same age, I’m always one of several with the same first name (and often middle name too!). Two of my SILs have the same name as me. I desperately want to avoid that for my kids.

There’s one name I really do love but DH is not completely sold on it. I think I might “win” this one though because there’s no alternative he likes better. Everything else (and we really must have looked at every baby name list by this point) is just…OK. Nothing is really grabbing me.

My daughter’s name is a beautiful traditional/old-fashioned English name but can be shortened to quite a punchy, cool nickname too. I want something similar for a boy. A name that’s traditional but also a bit cool. Not easy!

Robert and you could have Bobby/Robbie when he is little?
Richard with Richie, Donal with Donie?
Or you could just tell your DH he has until the baby is being registered to come up with a name you love or your calling him Joshua?

Joshua is a lovely name.
What about Henry or Jacob?

louisacat · 26/09/2021 19:49

Have you looked through the ons top 100 list? Your favourite names are all very popular so you might see something else you like in the top 20? Btw I love Theo and Joshua.
