I love it husband hates it
I think it’s cool- digs for short

The name Diggory is a boy's name of French origin meaning "Lost one".
It used to be a name used in Cornwall a long time a go.

What do you think?

Makes me think of The Magician's Nephew too, and for that reason I think of it as English but rare and quite old-fashioned. I believe it's pronounced DIG-uh-ree. Not sure why two gs - Digory seems more streamlined and would be pronounced the same way in English. If it's from the French, I'd associate it with de garé: of or from the station.

I love Digory, firstly because of The Magician's Nephew and Digory's is the name of a secret beach in Cornwall. I prefer the single 'g' spelling.

My DC2 was going to be Digory John but she was a girl.

PattyPan · 24/09/2021 19:45

Terrible name. It makes me think of the Magician's Nephew - Diggory isn't a very likeable character tbh. And Mungo has always sounded too close to a slur to me.

AGreenerShadeofKale · 24/09/2021 19:46

I remember Diggory Venn in Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy.
I quite like it if you are looking for something unusual.

MirandaBlu · 24/09/2021 19:50

Curious - which slur is Mungo close to, or is it just the general feeling of the name for you?

Mungo is the patron saint of Glasgow, but his formal (Christian) name was Kentigern.

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 24/09/2021 19:54

But … being likeable wasn’t the point of him! It was his flaws and weaknesses and mistakes, his battle with selfishness, his resilience, and, most of all his astonishment at the depravity of adults that made him just, well, stupendous.

Likeable? Psaw!

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 24/09/2021 19:57

Diggory is ok for a young child, but it doesn't really suit teens and adults. A bit like Poppy, Maisie etc for girls. Kind of cutesy.

WombatChocolate · 24/09/2021 19:59

I also thought I of Diggory Venn. ThbeReturn of the Native by Thomas Hardy. Dig fort was a reddleman, meaning he traded red dyes and had a reddish hue to him.

It would be a name he would forever have to repeat and spell to everyone. Depends if you want that for him.

Elisemum · 24/09/2021 20:00

Hickory diggory tock, the mouse climbed on the clock…. Or whatever the nursery rhyme is😂 absolutely horrible name, why do people want to do this to their kids, why??? Can someone explain to me? WTF Diggory? mungo? Sounds like Mongul 😂😂

FriedasCarLoad · 24/09/2021 20:00

I think it's rather nice. Was it the name of the boy in The Secret Garden?

However, I think both parents should be happy with the name.

brewstew · 24/09/2021 20:01

I rather like it however I much prefer Digby or Willoughby.

Kudostoyou · 24/09/2021 20:03

I dig it

PattyPan · 24/09/2021 20:04

@MirandaBlu I know it's an old Scottish name so do find it a shame how unusable it is to me. I like something like Angus though. Mungo sounds too similar to mong to me, which is a slur towards people with Downs Syndrome that was unfortunately in quite regular parlance when I was younger.

Possibly not @EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues but because of not liking him, I don't like the name either. Edmund's ruined for me that way really too.

Ilovedthe70s · 24/09/2021 20:21

Had a basset hound once called Diggory Doggery, lovely dog completely bonkers though.

MirandaBlu · 24/09/2021 20:22

Thanks, @pattypan, I get what you mean now. I've not heard that slur a lot - I'm Scottish, but grew up in the US, where I think it's used less or rarely - was aware of it but didn't immediately think of it from Mungo.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 24/09/2021 20:22

Awful

DramaAlpaca · 24/09/2021 20:23

To put it bluntly, it's horrible.

DismantledKing · 24/09/2021 20:23

What a terrible name

SirVixofVixHall · 24/09/2021 20:25

@EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues

I’ve always loved it (with just one ‘g’ I think?) since I read The Magician’s Nephew as a child. Still my very favourite children’s book.

The name seems tremendously out of style right now - in sound and associations - but you could start a trend!

Same. He is such a great character.
DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 24/09/2021 20:25

Not a fan, sorry.

TheLeadbetterLife · 24/09/2021 20:27

I like it. My percussion teacher at school was called Diggory. He was great, I have fond memories and the name is cool.

Poppetts1234 · 24/09/2021 20:28

I really like traditional English names so very unlike me to like something unusual.
I think it’s cool and would suit any age. Reminds me of a farm boy name. I picture someone like Dicken from secret garden.
I won’t be using it but I think it’s a shame that some people hate it as I’m in love with it.

DoodleBelle · 24/09/2021 20:34

I actually quite like it but I don’t think it’s a fair name to lumber a child with. Great for a pet!

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 24/09/2021 20:36

Ten gorillas. Sorry.
