Is Luca too popular?

DDSMUM2 · 23/09/2021 06:12

I really like this name for a boy but am worried it’s become too popular… do you already know a boy called this and if so do you mind sharing where you live?
Is it generally perceived as a boys name or a girls name?

More popular for a girl here (Norfolk) saying that all the ones I know are 16-20.

CantThinkOfaUserNameAgain · 23/09/2021 06:15

My Luca is 21 and we live in London. DH has Italian heritage and I can assure you it is a male name in Italy!

His name has stood the test of time - he loves it and so do I.

Blubells · 23/09/2021 06:58

Sound so feminine.

BrickingIt44 · 23/09/2021 06:59

Do you live on the second floor?

Blubells · 23/09/2021 07:02

In Hungary it's a popular girls name, their version of Lucy.

pinkchampagne1 · 23/09/2021 07:02

My DH’s 17 year old nephew is called Luca.
I work in a school and we had 2 in our year 1 class last year, although one was spelt Lucah.

pinkchampagne1 · 23/09/2021 07:03

All boys. Never heard of a girl called Luca

itsutterlyshit · 23/09/2021 07:07

My 1year old nephew is Luca. He's in Scotland.

I don't know any others personally but there are a couple of a similar age in baby and toddler groups he goes to

Elisemum · 23/09/2021 07:16

100% boys name! Never heard of a girl called Luca- that’d be stupid. It’s one of these names that you hear it’s popular but you actually haven’t met any!:) I don’t know any Lucas in my sons creche. I’m in Dublin. If you like the name go for it, it’s lovely

Blubells · 23/09/2021 07:20

Luca is a 100% girls name in Hungary and Croatia. I understand that it is a boys name in Italy (as are names like Andrea).

So outside of those countries it can be either, depending on your heritage.

It's been in the top 10 in Italy for years, a couple of years it was the most popular. There are 2-3 in every class. It's kind of the Italian equivalent of Jack in ubiquitousness.
Tigger85 · 23/09/2021 11:58

The two name meanings I have found for Luca are bringer of light and man from luciana so I don't see how it can be a girls name if it means man from luciana. I only know boys/ men called Luca. I think it's a lovely softer sounding boys name, there's always Luke or Lucas if you think Luca sounds too soft.

Blubells · 23/09/2021 12:18

Luca is a name for boys and girls. The boy’s name is an Italian form of the name Lucas, which is of Greek and Latin origin. The girl’s name Luca is a Hungarian and Croatian form of Lucia, which is of Latin origin.

Darceyhemingway · 23/09/2021 13:41

My cousin is called Luca and he's about 33. I do know quite a few babies but not that many. I prefer it to Lucas

SummaLuvin · 23/09/2021 13:46

Boys name for me.

What is too popular? Another one in the class of 30? Another in the whole primary school? Another in the area? It means different things to different people. Also knowing someone with a name isn’t helpful without more details. Most people know a Steven/Stephen but isn’t popular amount babies.

Bimblybomeyelash · 23/09/2021 13:50

I know 2 under 10.

Rosesareyellow · 23/09/2021 13:58

It’s a lovely name. I know two, it’s now a name of a Disney film too so I imagine that will make it more common in the years to come as well. Definitely more of a boys name I think, but could be uni-sex I suppose.

lobsteroll · 23/09/2021 14:01

I think it's lovely but definitely think it's going to become very popular due to the Disney film. But if you love it you shouldn't let that put you off.

wingsofabird · 23/09/2021 14:07

I would just check the official statistics if you're worried about it being a girl name @DDSMUM2
Statistics show:
8 baby girls names Luca in 2019
Over 1,300 baby boys named Luca
It's a boy name in this country, clearly. The stats speak for themselves

Luca is also not on a big upsurge so not jumping loads up the charts each year (see graph of official England and Wales stats)

names.darkgreener.com/#luca

It's a lovely name for a little boy. I'd pick it

RonniePickering · 23/09/2021 14:07

I know 2, both boys, NW England.
